‼️ Meet the New Bronze Radio Instructors & Assessors! πŸ“‘πŸŽ‰

This weekend at Inskip Cadet Centre, a number of cadets and staff from across the Wing successfully completed training that will enable them to deliver and assess Bronze Radio qualifications.

This is a significant development for Cumbria & Lancashire Wing, increasing our capacity to provide local radio training opportunities and making the qualification more accessible to cadets across our geographically large Wing. πŸŒπŸ“»

The training was delivered by Flt Lt Anderson and WO Paton, Wing Radio Officer, whose expertise and dedication ensured a highly successful weekend. πŸ‘

Congratulations to everyone who completed the course. Your commitment will play a vital role in supporting and developing radio communications training across the Wing. πŸ‘πŸ…

Very well done to all involved! πŸŽ‰

What made you join 1127 Kendal Sqn?

I joined 1127 Sqn when I was 13 years old, as a new enthusiastic second-class cadet. I progressed through the classification and rank structure attaining the rank of CWO and master cadet before I aged out of the organisation.

During my time I had many opportunities including a wing camp at RAF Halton, flying, first aid, shooting, method of instruction, D of E and gold leadership training at RAF Cranwell.

After ageing out I rejoined as a CI to pass on my knowledge to the cadets progressing through the squadron, taking on the role of Training Officer for a period.

I had ambitions of joining the military after my cadet career and felt like I wanted to develop my confidence, military knowledge and get a feel for a military career through camps and staff experiences.
RAFAC?

Best moment on 1127 or in RAFAC?

My gold leadership camp at RAF Cranwell was the best and most challenging experience in cadets with complex theoretical and practical leadership exercises, interspersed with physical challenges like log runs and long-distance orienteering.

What role do you have on Squadron?
I bring my previous Leadership training onto the unit supporting Blue and Bronze Leadership training.

What have you got planned for in 2026?

Develop cadets with blue and bronze leadership skills, incorporate into practical training on and off squadron.

Arrange more off squadron visits to various organisations for tours.

This week on meet the team monday we meet Christopher Hine 1127 Kendal Squadron, Air Training Corps Service Instructor.

What made you join 1127 Kendal Sqn? join RAFAC?

I joined as a cadet in 2015, I did everything available to me as a cadet from foot drill/banner drill, sport and week/weekend camps all the way up to completing Nijmegen in 2018. Left as a Cadet Sgt to join the RAF. After a short gap during training i rejoined the sqn as an SI and support the Squadron when home on leave.
As a cadet it was to make friends and have fun but also a stepping stone to joining the military career I have now.

Best moment on 1127 or in RAFAC?

My experience road marching at Nijmegen.

What role do you have on Squadron?

Due to limited opportunities to attended parade nights i act as a floater filling in gaps where required. SI at 2267 RAF Brize Norton sqn as supernumerary, there i am IC of drill, dress and deportment.

What have you got planned for in 2026?

Continue to attended sqn parade nights when available and help any Cadets wishing to learn more about the RAF.

What made you join 1127 Kendal Sqn? join RAFAC?

I Joined in 2024 as a captured parent after my son had joined the Squadron. Living some distance from the Squadron, I couldn't afford to drink in the pub twice a week whilst waiting. But really it was to volunteer and offer my help to Squadron.

Best moment on 1127 or in RAFAC?

Taking cadets flying on an active RAF base such as Leeming. Its great to see their expressions after their first flight.
What role do you have on Squadron?
Adj (Adjutant) - Making sure records and badges are up to date. Taking admin off the other staff so they can fulfil their roles with the cadets more effectively.

What have you got planned for in 2026?

I am looking forward to getting involved in more activities on and off Squadron as well as exploring options to progress into uniform roles to further my personal development and support the Squadron.

Next week we are meeting our Squadrons Service instructor Chris Hine.

Interested in joining the Squadron as either a Cadet or Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer, feel free to message this page or email [email protected].

This weekend Cadets and Staff from 1127 Kendal Squadron, Air Training Corps 2192 Appleby Grammar School Sqn ATC and Windermere Air Cadets joined together for a weekend of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award training in the Scotish Borders.

Split into two levels of ability the groups learnt new navigational skills, how to pack their equipment and cooked their own two courses meals.

After this they sat down as groups and selected their expedition areas to start planning their expedition routes ahead of a busy Summer of expeditions.

Meet the team Monday – Sergeant Rachel Breakell

What have you done in your time at 1127 Kendal Squadron and the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC)?

I joined in 2022 as a Civilian instructor and now progressed into the uniformed rank of Sergeant- Senior non-commissioned officer (SNCO) in March of this year.

What made you join RAFAC?

My daughter was a cadet at the time I joined and I wanted to give something back to the organization as I saw how it really benefits young people.
Best moment during your time at the Sqn?
I've had lots of great moments but my favorites have been the Sqn’s Hawick Fieldcraft Camp, receiving my Lord Lieutenant award and my week at RAF Cranwell command and leadership school were highlights.

Specialist skills you bring to the Sqn?

Having gained my activity first aid qualification St John's ambulance, through RAFAC instructors, I teach Blue and bronze first aid to cadets. I am also a keen Archery instructor running monthly sessions on the Sqn

What have you got planned for in 2026?

I shall be enjoying a well-earned holiday in April and on my return, I look forward to taking cadets flying, Cosford air show and Summer camps as well as attending regular squadron parade evenings on a Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Join us next week for an introduction to CI Matt Taylor.
