Streets Alive — Why the High Street Matters

Three of our team were delighted to attend this excellent event hosted by Kendal Futures last night, and what an evening it was.

Guest speaker David Rudlin, author of High Street, delivered a fascinating talk diving deep into the data behind the decline of town centres across the country and crucially, how some towns are turning the tide. Thought-provoking stuff. Supporting businesses, and making town centres places people genuinely want to visit is exactly the kind of practical, community-focused approach that we as Conservatives would bring to the council.

Story Homes sponsored the event. They shared details of their new developments at Burton Road and Brigsteer Rise here in Kendal.

Events like this remind us why it matters to stay engaged, stay informed, and play our part in keeping Kendal's high street thriving.

It was fantastic to see one of our own, Tom McPhail, out supporting our fellow Conservatives in Hawcoat & Newbarns this week.

We’re proud to stand alongside hardworking local Conservatives who are focused on delivering for their communities and listening to local people’s priorities.

Best of luck to Marco Fawcett and the entire Barrow & Furness Conservative Association in the days ahead. Their positive vision and community-focused campaign is exactly the kind of local leadership our towns and villages need.

What an incredible update from Herdwicks Cafe in Coniston.

This is proof that with the power of community, kindness can overcome negativity and hate can be reversed. What started as a deeply upsetting experience has been turned into something overwhelmingly positive by local people rallying around one of their own.

The support shown, the messages, reviews, visits, hugs and encouragement, demonstrates exactly why independent local businesses matter so much to our communities.

Well done to everyone at Herdwicks for staying positive through a difficult situation, and well done to everyone who chose to support a hardworking local business rather than join in online negativity.

This is community spirit at its very best.

Westmorland & Lonsdale Conservatives are deeply disappointed to hear about the treatment Herdwicks Cafe in Coniston has received online following a recent social media post.

Local businesses like Herdwicks are at the heart of our towns and villages. They support local farmers by sourcing local produce and meat, provide jobs for local people, and contribute enormously to the sense of community that makes places like Coniston so special.

Running an independent business is never easy, and it is appalling that genuine, hard-working people should face coordinated negative reviews and online abuse simply for doing their job and serving their community.

We would encourage people to support local businesses wherever they can, and if you’ve visited Herdwicks Cafe, please consider leaving an honest review based on your real experience. Better still, go and check them out for yourself.

Our local cafes, pubs, shops and businesses are vital community assets, and they deserve our backing.

In the last few days nearly 100 Labour MPs have called for the Prime Minister to resign. Four ministers have quit. It is clear Starmer's authority has gone and that he will not be able to deliver what little there is in this King's Speech. This is a government less than two years in office which has already run out of ideas and run out of road. Britain deserves better.
