Sizergh Castle NT

Sizergh Castle NT Please see http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sizergh for opening times This imposing house stands proud at the gateway to the Lake District.

Its rich and beautiful garden includes a pond, lake, a national collection of hardy ferns and a superb limestone rock garden. Still lived in by the Strickland family, Sizergh has many tales to tell and certainly feels lived in, with centuries-old portraits and fine furniture sitting alongside modern family photographs. The exceptional wood panelling culminates in the Inlaid Chamber, returned here

in 1999 from the Victoria and Albert Museum. The 647-hectare (1,600-acre) estate includes limestone pasture, orchards and semi-natural woodland.

Have you spotted these on Sizergh Fell? 🌸

From April through to June, delicate purple orchids bring a splash of colour to the estate.

They thrive in the thin, lime-rich soils of Helsington Barrows and Sizergh Fell - a real seasonal highlight if you’re out walking.

If you do spot them, share your photos with us 📸

Did you know? There’s a whole hidden world beneath your feet waiting to be explored at Sizergh…🌱

Follow the Holeslack trail and dive into the Wonder World: Earth children’s trail, where young explorers can discover the marvellous, muddy world of soil and the creatures that call it home.

While you’re there, visit Daughters of the Soil in Holeslack Barn, a striking photography exhibition by Joanne Coates celebrating women in agriculture and head to the Great Barn to see artwork inspired by soil from artists including Mariana Heilmann, Wim van Egmond and Elizabeth Clough.

No wellies? No problem! Families can borrow boots from Visitor Welcome and get stuck in.

It's National Gardening Week, and we are thinking of all the ways to make room for wildlife, whatever the size of your outdoor space 🌸🐝

By planting native flowers with blooms throughout the year, you can provide pollinators with a lasting source of food, while leaving a shallow tray of water out will keep birds and insects hydrated.

If you have a container garden, plant herbs such as marjoram or lavender. They have beautiful leaves and flowers, smell wonderful, are easy to grow, and benefit bees and butterflies.

Try not to be too tidy. A bundle of twigs placed at the back of garden borders or a pile of leaves beneath a hedge can provide shelter for invertebrates and small mammals.

Share your nature-friendly gardening tips in the comments!
