Could you help save a life near water? 💧

Students at Bedford College have been learning how.

Our Community Safety team recently delivered interactive water safety sessions to ESOL students, helping them to understand the risks of open water, what to do in an emergency and how to use the lifesaving "Phone, Float, Throw" method. From practising 999 calls to using throwlines, the hands-on sessions gave students the confidence and knowledge to act fast if someone is in danger.

As Steve Sugars, Group Commander Prevention, said, this initiative is "both timely and vital” and helps equip young people with “the knowledge and confidence to stay safe around water and to act quickly in an emergency.”

As we head into the warmer months, these simple messages could save lives ☀️ Take a moment today to talk to your children, family or friends about staying safe around water — one conversation could save a life.

Have you downloaded the What3Words app yet? 🤔

Our crews have attended several incidents this week where a What3Words location helped us find locations quickly - especially in places where a postcode just doesn’t cut it.

The app is free, simple to use, and can pinpoint your exact location in parks, woodlands and open countryside. It could make all the difference in an emergency.

Find out more about how it works by visiting our website and download the app today, so it’s ready for if you ever need us.

Thinking of cooling off in open water? 💧

It’s easy to forget that even the calmest lakes, rivers and canals can hide serious hazards just below the surface.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:
• Hidden obstacles — branches, rocks, shopping trolleys and other debris can sit just out of sight and cause injury if you jump or fall in.
• Sudden drop offs — water can go from shallow to deep in a single step, catching even confident swimmers off guard.
• Cold water shock — even in warm weather, deep water stays cold enough to affect your breathing and movement.
• Strong currents — fast moving water beneath the surface can pull you off your feet without warning.

Enjoying the outdoors is great but make sure to take a moment to stay aware of what might be below the surface. A little caution goes a long way to keeping you safe.

Perfect picnic weather? Absolutely! ☀️

Did you know an average of 73 fires start on grass, heathland and moorland every single day in England?

A few small actions can make a big difference:
1- Take glass home, as bottles and jars can magnify sunlight and spark a fire. Recycle them at home or at local recycling facilities
2 - Make sure ci******es are fully extinguished before you bin them.
3- Disposable BBQs can cause dry grass to catch fire easily, so bring along a picnic instead

We hope you enjoy the sunshine, explore safely, and help protect Bedfordshire’s beautiful green spaces. 🌿🔥

Heading out for a paddle or swim this half term? 🌊

Remember that even in hot weather, our lakes and rivers stay cold - cold enough to trigger cold water shock, an involuntary reaction that can affect anyone - no matter your age, fitness or swimming ability.

Even during a heatwave, Bedfordshire’s waters can still be cold enough to cause it.

The first 90 seconds are the most dangerous, so staying calm is vital.

If you get into difficulty, remember to FLOAT:
• Stay calm and avoid panicking
• Lean back, spreading your arms and legs
• Control your breathing
• Once calm, call for help, swim to safety if you can, or keep floating until help arrives

Knowing how to float to live could save your life. Please stay safe around the water this week. 💙
