Keighley Town Council – Statement of Condolence
Keighley Town Council is saddened to learn of the death of former Mayor of Keighley, Brian Welham, who died on Tuesday.
Councillor Welham holds a unique place in Keighley’s civic history as the final Mayor of the former Keighley Borough Council, serving during 1973–1974. In this role, he presided over the closing chapter of the borough council prior to local government reorganisation in 1974, which saw Keighley absorbed into the newly formed Bradford Metropolitan District.
His mayoralty is particularly noted for chairing the last meetings of the historic borough council, marking the end of over 90 years of Keighley’s independent municipal governance. His contribution at this pivotal moment in the town’s civic history remains a significant part of Keighley’s democratic heritage.
Following local government reorganisation, Councillor Welham remained closely associated with the town’s civic identity. In later years, he was instrumental in supporting efforts to restore Keighley’s civic traditions, including his advocacy in the early 2000s for the return of the mayoral chains and regalia to Keighley. This was part of a wider campaign which culminated in the establishment of the modern Town Council in 2002 and the re-establishment of civic symbolism and continuity in the town’s public life.
The mayoral chains and regalia remain an enduring symbol of Keighley’s civic dignity and continuity and Councillor Welham’s role in reconnecting the town with these traditions is acknowledged with gratitude.
As a mark of respect, the flags in the Town Hall Square will be flown at half-mast tomorrow and on the day of the funeral.
The Council extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those who knew him and recognises his lasting contribution to Keighley’s civic heritage.
