Saturday 6th June was our Public Open Day to mark the 50 Year Anniversary since the closure of HMS Ganges. That was the day, in 1976, the last recruitment of trainees at HMS Ganges passed out.
The camp was later decommissioned in October 1976 ending an era of naval training that started at Shotley in 1905.

Whilst Saturday has some driving rain the museum still had a huge influx of visitors who were able to enjoy sea shanties from The Shotley Wailers, face painting by Helen, and a whole host of interesting wares from the various members of Peninsula Crafts, Nick Carter a local artist with Ganges themed art, the Shotley Pier Group, Shotley Vineyard and Combat2Coffee in the marquee plus a selection of classic cars from Suffolk Car Enthusiasts outside.

Later in the afternoon the weather cleared and many volunteers enjoyed a very tasty BBQ, cooked by Janey from The Shipwreck who had providing food all day. A grand day was had by all.

Thanks you to all those who attended our event, those who provided interest to our visitors and to all those working hard to make our event a fantastic success.

Wrapping up the day and last guests to leave the museum we had Martin and Val Fox, Steve Whibley and Debbie Kiddier. A photo in front of The Indian Prince, HMS Ganges ships' figure head is obligatory and so is Colin, our chairman, being in it too 😁.

They also helped volunteers John, Jon, Michael, Adrian and Colin finish of the rum ration... 🥃🥃🥃⚓️

Today we held our private event for former HMS Ganges Trainees 'Ganges Boys' and later older trainees known as 'Six Week Wonders' plus permanent staff to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the final closure of the training establishment by the Royal Navy in 1976. The end of an era and mixed memories for many.

Here's a selection of photos from the day.

Thank you to all you helped make the event an enjoyable success including all our hard working volunteers, Shotley Marina staff and Janey and crew at The Shipwreck who provided much assistance and a fantastic buffet.

Tomorrow, Saturday 6th June, we have our Public Open Day.
