Calling all Scout leaders 📣
Symbols are a great way to support children and young people with communication and/or literacy difficulties 😀
✅ Check out these FREE resources available from Widgit Software for supporting Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers 💚

From learning the Scout Promise to spending their first night away from home, every experience in Scouts helps young people develop new skills, form lasting friendships and take on new challenges. ⚜️⛺

To help make those experiences more accessible, The Scouts has introduced Widgit Symbols across a growing range of resources, including visual timetables, symbol packs and visual stories, supporting young people from Squirrels and Beavers right through to Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

We spoke with the team behind the project about why they made inclusion a priority, how symbol-supported resources are helping volunteers create more accessible experiences, and the difference they're making for young people across the UK. 💬

‘We really believe these symbolised resources will make Scouts more inclusive and accessible for all young people…They can better support every child to understand activities, routines and traditions, regardless of their ability.’

Whether you have questions, concerns, or would simply like to learn more about how the service can support your child, these relaxed sessions are a great opportunity to find out more while enjoying the usual Bookbug fun of songs, rhymes and stories together!

Here are more ideas of how to develop phonological awareness skills (important for speech sound and early literacy development) using a story 📖 Perfect for supporting your little one at home, and for teachers and EYPs in schools and nurseries 😀
This week’s story is...Tiddler - The Story Telling Fish 🐠 📖
✅ Draw their attention to the rhyming words - talk about them sounding the same at the end 💬👂
✅ Cut out fish from tissues or toilet roll and then use the book to waft the fish for every syllable of different words ✂️ 🐟
✅ Create fish using milk carton lids. Drop a fish into a basin of water for every word in a short phrase (‘Tiddler is late’) 🐟 💦
✅ Draw their attention to words that start with the same sound (e.g. ‘Tiddler told tales’) 👂

✅ Draw their attention to the rhyming words - talk about them sounding the same at the end 💬👂
✅ Put a ‘splinter’ (cocktail stick) into a soft toy for every word in a short phrase (e.g. ‘weasels sit on easels’) 🐸
✅ Make frogs out of milk bottle lids and jump one on to a log for every syllable of different words (e.g. ‘splin-ter’) 🐸
✅ Jump or hop out the syllables of different words too🦶🦶
