Invergordon RNLI tasked to injured walker at Shandwick Beach

Volunteer crew from Invergordon RNLI were tasked on Monday 18 May to assist an injured walker on Shandwick Beach with a suspected broken ankle.

The volunteer crew had just completed a routine training exercise when HM Coastguard requested the launch of the station’s Shannon class lifeboat, Agnes AP Barr, to assist the casualty.

The Shannon class lifeboat departed its berth at Invergordon West Harbour at 8:46pm and arrived on scene approximately 20 minutes later. On arrival, casualty care trained crew members were deployed ashore using the station’s XEP daughter craft to assess the injured walker and assist in casualty care.

Also in attendance were crews from the Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who assisted the casualty to the Ambulance.

Once the casualty had been safely handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service, the lifeboat was stood down and released from service at 9:43pm.

The volunteer crew then returned to Invergordon West Harbour where lifeboat was washed down, refuelled and made ready for service again by 10:30pm.

A spokesperson for Invergordon RNLI said:

“Incidents like this highlight the close working relationship between all emergency services. We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.”

RNLI Invergordon lifeboat launched to reports of a vessel in difficulty near North Sutor

Invergordon RNLI lifeboat was paged to launch at 1:37pm today following reports of a skiff-like vessel thought to be in difficulty in the vicinity of the North Sutor at the entrance to the Cromarty Firth.

The volunteer crew of six launched promptly after receiving reports from HM Coastguard and made best speed to the area. Also assisting in the search were the Port of Cromarty Firth pilot boat and a local dolphin watching RIB.

A thorough search of the area was carried out by all assets involved. Following extensive enquiries and searches, no vessel in difficulty was located, and the incident was subsequently deemed a false alarm with good intent.

The lifeboat was then stood down and returned to the station, where it was made ready for service again by 3:30pm

RNLI Invergordon spokesperson Michael MacDonald said:

“While this thankfully turned out not to be an emergency, we would always encourage members of the public to contact the Coastguard if they believe someone may be in danger at sea. Early calls can save lives.”

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with our fellow search and rescue colleagues at Marine Rescue New South Wales, Australia.

Yesterday, six volunteers from Ballina responded to reports of a yacht in distress. In the course of that rescue, three lives were tragically lost, including two of the volunteers.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said: “These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.”

This devastating loss is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who put themselves at risk to save others at sea.
