The Town Council carries out a number of functions including:
- looking after open spaces such as the recreation ground, Britten’s Field the canal and Herne Hill,
- providing and maintaining play facilities
- maintaining street furniture
- responding to planning applications on a consultative basis
- managing the cemetery including interment procedures and recording of burials
In addition, the T
own Council also acts as an important channel or platform for local people’s views or concerns including those outside of the Town Council’s responsibility that can be passed onto the relevant local authority such as the District or County Council. Town Council meetings are currently held every month in the Minster Rooms, Ilminster. In addition to Town Council meetings there are regular committee meetings for Resources, Planning, Highways & Transport and the Open Spaces Committee. Council and Committee meetings are usually held on Tuesday evenings and the public are welcome to attend. Before the formal start of each meeting members of the public have the opportunity to ask questions or raise issues relevant to the work of the Council or Committee. The overall time available for this session is restricted to 15 minutes unless the Chair decides otherwise. Individual speakers are restricted to 3 minutes and are asked not to repeat points that have been made previously. It is helpful if potential contributors can make themselves known to the Town Clerk before the meeting so that the session can be programmed effectively. The name of any speaker will be recorded, together with a broad outline of the point(s) they raise.
