Ilminster Town Council

Ilminster Town Council Ilminster Town Council comprises 15 Councillors who represent the community. Meetings start at 7.30pm and usually last no more than 2 hours.

The Town Council carries out a number of functions including:
- looking after open spaces such as the recreation ground, Britten’s Field the canal and Herne Hill,
- providing and maintaining play facilities
- maintaining street furniture
- responding to planning applications on a consultative basis
- managing the cemetery including interment procedures and recording of burials

In addition, the T

own Council also acts as an important channel or platform for local people’s views or concerns including those outside of the Town Council’s responsibility that can be passed onto the relevant local authority such as the District or County Council. Town Council meetings are currently held every month in the Minster Rooms, Ilminster. In addition to Town Council meetings there are regular committee meetings for Resources, Planning, Highways & Transport and the Open Spaces Committee. Council and Committee meetings are usually held on Tuesday evenings and the public are welcome to attend. Before the formal start of each meeting members of the public have the opportunity to ask questions or raise issues relevant to the work of the Council or Committee. The overall time available for this session is restricted to 15 minutes unless the Chair decides otherwise. Individual speakers are restricted to 3 minutes and are asked not to repeat points that have been made previously. It is helpful if potential contributors can make themselves known to the Town Clerk before the meeting so that the session can be programmed effectively. The name of any speaker will be recorded, together with a broad outline of the point(s) they raise.

We bring you this week, a short video of a Looper Caterpillar aka the Inchworm.
Inchworms can change colours to blend in to their surroundings, often resembling twigs or leaves. They also only have legs on the front and back of their bodies, leaving their middle section completely legless. Once the inchworms have pupated and metamorphosed, they emerge as moths. Geometer moths have thin torsos and wide wings, usually held flat out to the sides

In August 2025, Ilminster Town Council were approached by the South West Heritage Trust seeking support in obtaining a rare Gold, Roman ring (now known as the Ilminster ring) along with 297 copper alloy and base silver Roman coins, which was discovered near Ilminster by a Kevin Minto.
£750 was donated by Ilminster Town Council which was put towards keeping the ring in Somerset. We are working with South West Heritage Trust to ensure that residents of Ilminster get to view the ring with more details to follow about an upcoming event.
