We want to thank everyone for their continued support and kind words recently. The last few weeks have been emotional but we were so happy to hear and read all about the memories made here at Dillington House.

“Dillington holds special memories for myself and my family. My nan (Daisy Thornton) worked at the house for over 30 years as a cook until the 1980s when she retired (pictured third from left). Her daughters Ann (my mum) Gwen and Jean also worked at the house in the kitchens from the 1950s onwards and remember well the many visitors including the railway workers who used the house as a training base.

See picture (Nan and her daughters Gwen and Ann either side of her).

When I started my career with the Council in 1995 I was a YTS junior at Dillington with endless days of using the temperamental photocopier for the many conference visitors. We had a great team spirit and it was a great place to learn about customer service. My uncle Norman (Bellew’s the Butcher of Ilminster) supplied the meat to the kitchen for many years, it was great to see local produce and suppliers being supported.

My late Dad Dennis Bellew worked as a caretaker which I know he loved, especially all the American guests he greeted, who loved visiting Dillington. When dad retired he focussed on his passion for restoring vintage cars which he often brought to Dillington for events and weddings (see picture), we also celebrated his 80th Birthday at Dillington, the staff were brilliant and it was a very special day which I’ll never forget. Thank you to everyone who has made it such a special place to visit.”

Last week, the “Advanced Crochet with Tracy Chapman” marked the last adult education course to be held here at Dillington House, and we just had to take a photo to mark the occasion.

After striving to create the best place for those to teach their crafts and pass on their knowledge, we are saddened to know this was our last at Dillington. We have always been overwhelmed with the kind words people have had to say about the courses we have run over the last few years.

As we close the doors at Dillington House for the last time, we wanted to send one final message to you all...

The 30th September 2023, brings us to the end of a truly incredible story of conferences, meetings, courses, lectures, concerts, weddings and celebrations. It has been our real pleasure to work with such wonderful event organisers, happy couples, tutors, musicians, business owners and team leaders during that time. We have loved working with you all on your events and wish you the very best for the future.

To all our customers, whether regulars, occasional visitors or recent new faces, a heartfelt thank you for all your support. Your willingness to visit and spend your time here has enabled us to keep doing what we do best over the years – bringing people together. There genuinely would have been no Dillington House without you.
We will all leave with many fond memories of Dillington House and we hope you all do too.

Best wishes,

The Dillington Team

We wanted to do a to some of the weddings that have taken place at Dillington House over the years. We wish all of the happy couples who had their special day here, all the best for the future.

Today marks the last week at Dillington House. When we announced back in April we would be closing, there were a lot of emotions that arose. However, seeing our visitors and guests share their memories made us realise that although Dillington House is closing its doors, the memories and moments will forever live on.

We thank each and every one of you, whether you have visited recently or in the past, attended a learning course, or just came to see the grounds and enjoy a cup of tea. We appreciate the time you spent here and the kindness and love you brought. Dillington was just as much about the events as it was about the people that came to visit.

Share your memories in the comments below and tag those you made those moments with.

Here’s another fabulous memory of Dillington House.

"Dillington House is one of England's special places. A truly lovely rural surrounding in which to learn and study, to walk and think, to eat well and make new friends. Whether your interest is history, photography or visiting gardens, you'll find what you need at Dillington House. Prepare to be stimulated, intrigued and uplifted." Rosie Boycott, Writer and Broadcaster

“My annual trip to Dillington is something of a highlight. It is a magical place, which manages to be at its best in every season, and my spirits always soar as I come up that long and enchanting drive to the certainty of a first-rate lunch and later, to my shame, a fat boy's tea.” The late Richard Holmes

'I love going to Dillington. Where is there like it? Arriving is like a decompression, a deep breath of pure air. The programmes of courses, concerts and talks are exceptional. The company is delightful; the food and the ambience add to the pleasure; and all set in a magical landscape which seems to me a secret Somerset paradise. In a world of increasing dislocation, Dillington has a real sense of its place in the world.’ Michael Wood
