Last night a Crew from Ilminster were mobilised straight after drill night to a ‘Fire in the Open’.
After some searching the crew found a sizeable fire which involved a large conifer tree. The crew got to work quickly using a CAF (compressed air foam) jet to extinguish the fire. We believe this fire had started accidentally due to a poorly placed ‘controlled burn’ (bonfire) nearby. Please remember that although we have had some rain in recent weeks some areas are still extremely dry and fires can spread quickly.

🚨📟New incident📟🚨
Both of chards pumps along with colleagues were mobilised to the following incident in the early hours of this morning.

Fire control received a call to reports of a fire at a domestic property in Chard.

Control immediately mobilised 3 fire appliance, 2 from Chard and 1 from Axminster with a supporting officer.

Quickly after initial crews arrived on scene, 2 further appliances were requested for additional support. These were mobilised from Ilminster and Crewkerne as well as specialist appliances from Honiton and Martock and additional supporting officers.

Update 4.30am - Fire is confirmed out, crews are investigating adjoining properties and damping down hotspots.

Update 5.45am - This was a semi-detached first floor flat, 60% damaged by fire and 80% damaged by smoke. Accidental cause.

We have been experiencing a high number of calls following the heavy rain in Devon and Somerset earlier today, with more rain expected to sweep across the area this evening.

Water levels are likely to keep rising, with roads becoming flooded. Please do not drive through floodwater, especially where warning signs have been put in place.

Just 30cm of flowing water can make a vehicle stuck or even sweep it away.

Today we received the very sad news of the passing of Ken Foster.

Ken was a station officer here at Ilminster, and served between 1st February 1971 - 29th February 1996. He can be seen pictured below front right.

Our condolences go out to all Ken's friends and family, and we thank him for his dedicated service to our community.

Rest in peace Ken.

Last night we were very fortunate to be able to run an exercise at Barrington Court NT . The exercise incorporated a lot of different disciplines we train for, and allowed us to work with staff members at Barrington Court to ensure we are best placed to respond to any incidents in the future.

Crews attended in a staggered format from Martock Fire Station Chard Fire Station and Taunton Fire Station to replicate realistic resourcing for the incident commander in charge.

We practiced our breathing apparatus emergency procedures and, using the environmental protection unit from Taunton, our decontamination procedures were also put to the test.

A big thanks to all those that attended and in particular Barrington Court for hosting the event.
