🚫 To the few who leave bagged dog poo behind

Some dog owners bag their dog’s waste and leave it on a tree, fence, or in a hedge, planning to pick it up later…

Unfortunately, quite often it’s forgotten and left behind.

⚠️ As soon as a bagged poo is put down, it is legally classed as littering. Leaving it behind creates a health hazard, is unpleasant for others, and makes our outdoor spaces less enjoyable!

✅ Carry your dog waste until you reach a bin, any public litter bin will do, not just a dog waste bin.

Your cooperation helps keep North Devon clean and safe for everyone.

Two people have been fined at court for fly-tipping offences, following successful prosecutions from North Devon Council.

Cases against Michael Turvey of Church Street, Ilfracombe, and Tracey Williams of Cedars Park, Barnstaple, were heard at separate hearings at Barnstaple Magistrates' Court on Monday, 1 June.

Turvey pleaded guilty to an offence of fly-tipping at Tarry Lane, off Ilfracombe High Street on 10 July 2025. The fly-tipped waste was from a house clearance and included Christmas decorations, framed pictures, an ironing board and exercise equipment including an exercise bike.
Council officers were able to trace the waste back to Turvey. CCTV footage confirmed he spent an hour moving items from a property in the High Street to Tarry Lane.
Turvey was ordered to pay a total of £826, comprising a fine of £233, a victim surcharge of £93, and £500 towards costs.

In a separate case, Williams, aged 60, pleaded guilty to an offence of fly-tipping in the car park of Sainsbury's in Barnstaple. A member of the public witnessed Williams emptying black bags containing glass from her car into a hedge near the end of the car park.
Council officers investigated and found 15 bags containing glass bottles and other waste. Officers were able to trace the waste back to Williams from her vehicle details.
Williams was ordered to pay a total of £780, comprising a fine of £200, a victim surcharge of £80 and £500 towards costs.

New Community Life Survey Launches to Tackle Loneliness and Strengthen Belonging in Northern Devon

A new Community Life Survey has launched across North Devon and Torridge, aiming to better understand local experiences of connection, loneliness, and belonging – and to inform collective action to improve community wellbeing and inclusion across Northern Devon.

Led by North Devon Voluntary Services (NDVS) and supported by North Devon Council, the survey invites all residents to share their views:

👉 Take part here:
https://letstalk.northdevon.gov.uk/community-life-survey

The survey forms part of the ‘Thriving in Northern Devon’ partnership strategy, led by One Northern Devon and Northern Devon Futures, which aims to strengthen community wellbeing, inclusion, and resilience across the area.

This local initiative builds on national data which has highlighted concerning levels of loneliness and reduced sense of belonging across Devon. However, partners recognise that national surveys do not fully capture the unique realities, strengths, and challenges of communities in Northern Devon.

Partners across health, local government, and the voluntary sector are supporting this work and actively sharing the survey with colleagues, service users, patients, and local communities to ensure as many voices as possible are heard.

Marie Gould, CEO of NDVS, said:

“We hear every day about the impact of social isolation, loneliness, and not feeling part of a community. At the same time, we also see the incredible ripple effect of volunteering, kindness, and people coming together.
This survey is about understanding both – what’s working well, and where we need to do better – so that we can build stronger, more connected communities together.”

The survey uses recognised Community Life Survey questions, enabling comparison with national data, while also capturing local insight to create a meaningful baseline for Northern Devon.

The findings will:

Help identify where support is most needed

Highlight community strengths and local assets

Inform future collaborative action across organisations and communities

Support strategic priorities around health, wellbeing, and inclusion

Support long-term work to reduce loneliness, strengthen belonging, and tackle inequalities

Residents, community groups, and organisations are encouraged to participate and share the survey widely.

🗓 The survey is open until: Monday the 3rd of August

Paper copies of the survey are being made available through local community locations. If you would like to receive a paper version, please contact: [email protected] or call 01271 861300.https://letstalk.northdevon.gov.uk/community-life-survey

Reasons to volunteer...

• Volunteering can enhance your sense of purpose and fulfilment, as it allows you to contribute positively to your community and make a difference in the lives of others.

• This sense of contribution often leads to increased happiness and a reduction in stress levels.

• Volunteering can also provide opportunities to develop new skills and gain valuable experiences, which can boost self-confidence and personal growth.

• Additionally, it often involves social interactions that can help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, creating a strong sense of community and belonging.

• Studies have shown that people who volunteer regularly tend to have lower rates of depression and anxiety, as the act of giving can activate the brain's reward system, releasing feel-good chemicals like dopamine and endorphins.

• Physical health can benefit too, as many volunteer activities encourage movement and can improve cardiovascular health.

• Volunteering is mutually beneficial, it not only supports those in need but also enriches the volunteer's life, promoting overall wellbeing and happiness.

To continue Volunteers Week Coral, another of Ilfracombe’s younger volunteers, talked to us about why she began volunteering and how it has benefitted her;

‘I decided to begin volunteering because I had been going to Scouts since I was 6 and felt that it had a major impact on my life! The support and evenings run by the volunteers helped to shape me into the person I am today, and I wanted to do the same for young people in my community. Through volunteering, I have experienced benefits such as an improved confidence working with and around children and other people. As well as this, I have learned to be better at time keeping (e.g. through running activities during our weekly sessions), which was something I struggled with prior to volunteering.’

If you have any questions or want to find out more about the wide variety of volunteer roles Ilfracombe has to offer, pop into the Ilfracombe Centre (open Tues - Fri) and chat to our Community Officer.

😠 Fed up of stepping around dog poo in North Devon?

We know it’s frustrating when dog waste is left in our parks, streets, and playgrounds - and we’re working hard to tackle it.

Our dog wardens patrol regularly, but the public are our biggest asset in keeping North Devon clean and enjoyable for everyone. You can help by being our eyes and ears!

How can you help? If you see dog fouling:
📷 Take a clear photo of the waste and its location — this is essential evidence.
📍 If you feel comfortable and safe, any extra details (such as the dog, owner, or vehicle registration) can be helpful — but your safety always comes first.
📝 Report it online:
https://www.northdevon.gov.uk/environment/dogs-in-north-devon/dog-fouling-and-dog-bins

Every report helps our dog wardens focus their patrols, identify repeat problem areas, and take action where it’s needed most.

Thank you to everyone who already cleans up after their dogs - together, we can make North Devon cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone 💚
