Today marks the start of Diabetes Week (8-15 June) - with this year's theme 'Let's change how we talk about diabetes' as part of the Strike Out Stigma message.

Eight out of 10 people living with diabetes say they’ve faced negative attitudes because of their diabetes - people passing judgement, making sweeping statements, or blaming and shaming people living with diabetes.

Our diabetes team will be hosting a stand in the Peterborough City Hospital Atrium throughout the week to offer advice, support and education.

As we come to the end of Volunteers’ Week, we’d like to say a huge thank you to our incredible Trust volunteers 💙

We’re so grateful for every hour our brilliant volunteers give, bringing energy, kindness and heart to everything they do. From supporting staff to enhancing the smooth running of our hospitals, their contribution makes a real difference every single day.

We appreciate every moment given and every act of kindness shown. This week, we were also delighted to host thank you events where volunteers could come together to chat and mingle, kindly funded by the Volunteer Charity Fund.

To all our volunteers - thank you for everything you do.

The final volunteer role we're going to be showcasing is our Stamford DTU volunteers.

At Stamford Day Treatment Unit, our volunteers welcome patients and visitors to the centre, guiding them to the appropriate clinic areas and assisting those who need wheelchair support. They answer questions, and chat with patients awaiting appointments which can help to ease anxiety. Volunteers also offer practical support, such as escorting patients back to the main hospital - umbrella in hand on rainy days, to ensure they feel comfortable and cared for throughout their visit.

Barbara, who volunteers at Stamford DTU, said: “I love chatting with patients, relatives, and staff. I was inspired to become a volunteer to give something back after my partner died, and I find it incredibly rewarding to support patients who may be feeling nervous, as well as talking with relatives who often have such interesting stories to share. I previously worked on the Van Geest Ward, and during one shift at the DTU I even met a relative who knew the Van Geest family well.”

Swan volunteers begin each shift by collecting the patient listing and offering the “Can We Help?” leaflet to new patients and families. Throughout the shift, they provide gentle companionship and emotional support, whether sitting with patients, giving families a chance to rest, or offering small comforts like drinks or a newspaper. They check in regularly to ensure everyone feels cared for, including being present with patients who have no visitors and, when needed, sitting with those nearing the end of life. Volunteers also record visit notes and prepare “Overnight Packs” for relatives who may need to stay. The role is open to people of all faiths or none and is rooted in compassion above anything else.

“As SWAN volunteers, we feel privileged to support patients and families at the end of life. Offering compassion, comfort and small practical acts of care helps make a difficult time a little easier. We can’t change what’s happening, but being a calm, caring presence, listening, supporting and simply being there feels deeply meaningful. Working alongside dedicated staff and fellow volunteers inspires us, and it’s an honour to make a difference when it matters most.”

Please be aware of the temporary closure of Car Park 2 (Patient and Public Treatment Centre Car Park) today. This is due to our work to install new modular staff accommodation at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, including crane lifts and module installation over the coming weeks.
This will also impact on the below scheduled Saturdays:

Saturday 6 June
Saturday 13 June
Saturday 20 June
Saturday 27 June
Saturday 18 July
Saturday 25 July
Saturday 8 August

There will be clearly marked alternative arrangements in place with patients and visitors to our hospital being redirected to the staff car park located at the front of the hospital site on the Saturday’s when traffic to and from the hospital site is reduced. This is to keep the impact to operational needs to a minimum where possible. Patients and hospital visitors parking in the staff car park will not be requested to pay while the Treatment Centre Car Park is closed.

There will be an increase in delivery vehicles accessing the site with traffic marshals in place to support safe vehicle movement. Please allow extra time when arriving on site. There will also be short periods of elevated noise during working hours and some weekend activity to reduce weekday disruption.

We are working closely with clinical and operational teams to minimise disruption, maintain safe access across site and scheduled high-impact works at quieter times and we will continue to ensure that emergency and ambulance access will be prioritised throughout.

Thank you, we appreciate your understanding while we improve our facilities.

Chaplaincy Support Volunteers begin each shift by collecting the visit list from the Chaplaincy office, then spend time with patients and their families offering companionship, emotional support, and, where appropriate, spiritual or non spiritual visits, including prayers when requested. They may make drinks to enhance the interaction and ensure any concerns are passed promptly to nursing staff or the Chaplains.

“What we enjoy most is being there for patients - offering calm, compassionate support in moments when it matters most. Whether helping someone keep worship meaningful, listening to worries, easing loneliness or bringing a little light to a difficult day, these small connections feel deeply meaningful.

"Being part of a supportive volunteer group and contributing to whole-person care leaves us humbled, grateful and proud to make a difference.”

Our amazing volunteers support in many roles enhancing the smooth running of our hospitals and helping other staff members on a daily basis. We thought you may be interested to have an insight into the different roles of hospital volunteers. For example, our Stores Volunteers completed more than 2,000 deliveries during the year, helping reduce staff interruptions and keeping essential items moving across the hospital.

That’s the equivalent of:

• Walking from Peterborough to Cairo
• Covering the length of the UK nearly five times
• Completing around 178 marathons inside hospital corridors
• Travelling from Peterborough to New York and partway back again

💛 Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers!💙

Our Hand & Arm Massage Volunteers use relaxation techniques learned through accredited training to offer patients and staff a basic hand and forearm massage, supporting wellbeing through friendly conversation and attentive listening. They help create a person-centred, holistic service that complements the medical environment. This role requires a full day of onsite massage training.

“Helping patients relax with a gentle massage and a friendly chat is incredibly rewarding. We value having the time to listen, ease discomfort and make a small difference to someone’s day. Being part of the team and back in a hospital environment feels meaningful and satisfying.”
