**Northern Sector Update**

“ What a brilliant day at the Beds & Cambs Wing Northern Sector Field Day! ☀️

Based out of 511 (Ramsey) Squadron for the day, our cadets threw themselves into a brilliant range of challenges, putting their skills to the test across leadership exercises, first aid scenarios, communication exercises and drill.

A massive thank you to WO Whymark for keeping everyone energised with a fantastic BBQ lunch! 🍔🔥

The competition was incredibly close, but a huge congratulations to our overall winners and runners-up:

🏆 1st Place: 2331 (St Ives) Sqn
🥈 2nd Place: 272 (Wisbech) Sqn
🥉 3rd Place: 73 (Huntingdon) Sqn

Well done to everyone who took part and made the day such a success. You did your squadrons proud! 👏”

Volunteers Week! 🤘
I’m CI Olaf Haitink, and recently I was offered a last‑minute flying allocation for four cadets at Flitwick (1985). After juggling a few personal commitments, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Within a few days, I’d advertised it on Cadet Portal, shared it on Band, selected the cadets, completed the paperwork, and confirmed everything. Before I knew it, all four cadets had flown—and then I was told to suit up, as it was my turn next!
I’ve been a CI for 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days, after being “voluntold” by my son, who was a cadet at the time and is now a Sergeant. Having organised 14 flying events as EO, I was then offered—and gladly accepted—my first flight in a light aircraft since my PPL lapsed back in April 2003.
Perfectly timed ahead of Volunteers’ Week, I was also presented with my First Flight Certificate by Wing Commander Gensler.
I’m incredibly proud to be part of RAFAC and remain committed to serving as a CI—and perhaps one day as uniformed staff—until at least one of the cadets I’ve supported rises through the ranks to become an RAF pilot!

Volunteer Week:
I’m Sgt Michelle Dennett-Cook from 1094 (City of) Ely Squadron. I currently serve as the Squadron Training Officer and, more recently, as the Eastern Sector Duke of Edinburgh Officer alongside WO Jestice.
I have been in uniform with the Squadron for three and a half years, having joined due to my military family background and a desire to give something back.
What I enjoy most is seeing cadets having fun while gaining experiences and opportunities that I didn’t have myself. I strive to keep the training programme engaging and enjoyable, while still ensuring cadets develop the knowledge and skills they need to progress through their classifications.
Our Squadron really does feel like a small family, which makes it an even more rewarding environment to be part of.

Volunteer Week!
"Hello, I am Flight Sergeant Donoghue from 1094 (Ely) Squadron. I have been at Ely Squadron for 10 years; prior to that, I was a cadet myself, reaching the rank of CWO at 444 Shoreditch Squadron, London Wing.
My time as a cadet, which lasted 7 years, was a fantastic part of my life. I attended cadets five nights a week, and every weekend there was always something going on—we were always busy.
My Commanding Officer, Flt Lt Ron Frewin, encouraged us to aim high, take part in everything, and always do our best. I took part in some amazing events and opportunities—those were some of my best days.
I now volunteer with the Air Cadets to give back and to provide you with the same opportunities I had. I want to help you aim high, achieve your goals, and encourage you to try new activities outside of your comfort zone.
I am now the Eastern Sector SNCO and the Wing DofE Officer. I don’t just encourage my cadets—I’m there for all of you.
I hold all three DofE awards: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. My aim is to get every cadet in the Wing enrolled in the DofE scheme.
The impact I aim to have on cadets is that I work at your level—I join in, have fun, and I am always out and about at Wing events. So please feel free to come and speak to me about anything.

Volunteers Week! Spotlight on Sergeant Jamie Sarll 😎 “Running in the family!” Pictured here as a cadet in the 80's with his Grandad and as a Father with his son who is currently a cadet.
“From being a 2482 (Henlow) cadet in the 80’s, I returned to my roots two years ago as a Civilian Instructor, moving into uniform 9 months ago. My role is as staff lead for our new recruits, seeing them through from their first parade night to their passing out parade six months later. Overseeing their drill, First Class training and as many ‘Blue’ skills as possible, the highlight so far for me was the first ‘passing out’ parade. Seeing 26 new cadets looking super smart and having achieved so much made me really proud!”

**AIR LEAGUE FLYING SCHOLARSHIP**

Cadet Corporal Ariyaana Khanom from 1094 (Ely) Squadron Air Training Corps has been awarded an Air League Flying Scholarship.

This highly competitive scholarship was exclusively open to RAF Air Cadets and awarded only to those who successfully met demanding assessment and interview standards.

As part of the programme, successful candidates will undertake their flying training with ACS Flight Training at Perth Airport in Scotland, the designated location for this year's course. Reflecting on her achievement, Cpl Khanom said:

"I am incredibly proud and excited to have been awarded a prestigious Air League 12-Hour Flying Scholarship, an opportunity that brings me one step closer to achieving my ambitions in aviation."

"The scholarship will see me travel to Scotland this summer to undertake eight days of residential flying training with ACS Flight Training at Perth Airport."

"Thanks to the generous support of The Air League, all flying training, accommodation and even my meals will be fully funded, allowing me to focus entirely on developing my flying skills and making the most of this incredible experience."

"Being selected for an Air League Scholarship for the second consecutive year is a tremendous honour. The Air League has a long history of proactively helping young people pursue careers and opportunities in aviation, and I feel privileged to be joining a community of talented and passionate young aviators from across the United Kingdom."

"I am particularly looking forward to learning from experienced instructors, meeting fellow scholarship recipients and challenging myself in a new environment. The scholarship represents not only an opportunity to gain further flying experience but also to build on my confidence in the air, further develop my leadership skills and broaden my understanding of the aviation industry."

"I would like to thank The Air League, my Squadron CO, and everyone who has supported and encouraged me throughout my cadet journey. Their guidance and belief in me have helped make this achievement possible."

"This years Scholarship programme will culminate in the Air League Scholarship Awards Reception in London in October 2026, an event that I am honoured to be working towards.
This is an exciting new chapter in my aviation journey to fulfil my dream of becoming a pilot and flying for a living."

"I would highly recommend joining the Air Cadets to any young person aspiring to reach for the sky"
