It is very encouraging to see experienced councillors coming together to form a Joint Administration to help steer the council through the significant challenges of Local Government Reorganisation.

At a time of major change, experience and stability matter more than ever. This is not the moment for point-scoring or political game-playing; it is a time for councillors to work together in the best interests of residents and the future of the council.

The new Unitary model, expected to be announced at the end of June or July, will require strong leadership, sound judgement, and the experience of those who understand how local government works. Bringing together talent, knowledge, and experience will be essential to ensuring a smooth transition.

Equally important is providing reassurance and stability for council staff during this period of uncertainty. They will need confidence in the leadership of the council as we move into the next stage of its development.

Now that the election is over and the new District Council results are confirmed, I feel it’s the right time to address some of the comments and criticism directed at me during the campaign.

I was called a traitor, a turncoat, and accused of having no principles. The reality is much simpler than some have tried to portray.

I resigned from Labour in November 2025 after serving almost four years as a councillor because I felt the party had moved away from the progressive values that first led me to join over 30 years ago. I became increasingly uncomfortable with the direction of travel on issues including internal democracy, ethics, and the party’s silence on Gaza, to name just a few.

After resigning, my intention was simply to continue quietly serving as an Independent councillor for the remainder of my term. I did not publicly attack the party or seek to create division.

However, following the announcement that the postponed local elections would go ahead in May 2026 — despite further elections being required in May 2027 for the new Unitary Council as part of Local Government Reorganisation — I was approached by the Liberal Democrats in January to stand. The request was based largely on my professional experience in local government and the importance of continuity during this transition period.

Councillors are not “owned” by political parties. Like MPs, they are elected to think independently and act according to their principles and the interests of the communities they represent.

What concerns me most is the increasingly hostile nature of politics. Too often, personal attacks discourage decent people from stepping forward to serve their communities. Local politics should be about representation, experience, and community service — not abuse, tribalism, or point scoring.

People from all backgrounds get involved in local government because they care about their communities. We should encourage that involvement, not drive people away from it.

Results

The results are in, and I am no longer the Huntingdonshire District Councillor for the St Ives South ward

Firstly, congratulations to Cllr Nic Wells and Cllr Alex Bulat on their success, and I wish them all the best in the role.

Of course, I’m disappointed not to have been re-elected, but I’m also incredibly proud of the positive campaign we ran — one that focused on local issues and on delivering real benefits for our town

A huge thank you to everyone who voted for me, and to the friends, supporters, and residents who encouraged me along the way. I am truly grateful and more than a little humbled by their support and encouragement over the last 4 years.

St Ives, is my home, and that doesn’t change because of an election result. I’m still involved in the local community supporting the Corn exchange and other orgnanisations

I care about our local community and will always speak up for local residents and do my best to support the town however I can

We’re now in the final hours before the District Council elections on 7th May

Four years ago, you put your trust in me to represent St Ives South—and it’s been an incredible journey since.

We stepped into the unknown with no party in overall control, but by working together in a Joint Administration, we’ve delivered real results for Huntingdonshire and for our local community.

I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and the joint working

St Ives South isn’t just a ward to me. It’s my home. It’s where I’ve worked, and where I’ve raised my family, its where my son first went camping on Holt Island.

Not sure if this is considered a political post but just in case
