πŸ”₯ Moorland Fire Safety Reminder πŸ”₯
As the hot weather continues, we’re urging everyone to act sensibly and responsibly on our moorland.
Today our crews were called to two separate incidents:

β€’ A fire in the open at Blackmoorfoot Reservoir
β€’ A BBQ-related fire at Redbrook

A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is active across our moorland, which prohibits BBQs, fires, and any activity that risks ignition. These rules are in place to protect our landscape, wildlife, and communities.
If you see fire or smoke on the moorland, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service. Early reporting helps prevent small incidents becoming serious wildfires.
Please help us keep our moorland safe.

New Incident - Sunday 24/05/26
At 05:34 this morning, crews from Huddersfield and Slaithwaite were mobilised to a flat fire in Crosland Moor. Crews used 2 breathing apparatus and 1 hose reel to extinguish the fire that caused extensive smoke damage throughout the property. This incident was made 'persons reported' on arrival as the location of the occupant was unknown until they presented themselves later during the incident.
An occupant of the neighbouring flat sheltered in place under advice from the Fire Control room and was walked to safety by fire crews. West Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service attended the incident and a section of Blackmoorfoot Road was closed whilst the incident was dealt with. Smoke detectors were fitted and working in the property.

** Friday 22nd May ** Featuring sheep! **

πŸš’ 0918 Crews mobilised to a Road Traffic Collision in Crosland Moor. Stood down on arrival.

πŸͺ‘ 1030 The weekly Movement And Games In Chairs (MAGIC) session starts on station, supported by crew members. The session is light exercise for the body and mind, and socialising, open to all. It helps keep socially isolated people connected and active, and is suitable for all levels of ability. Always a friendly laugh had!

πŸš’ 1039 Crews mobilised alongside Meltham Fire Station to an automatic fire alarm at high rise flats in Paddock. Proved to be a false alarm good intent.

β˜•οΈ Back to station in time for a brew with the MAGIC attendees πŸ«–

β˜€οΈ 1200 The Crew prepare to set off on a visit to our Moorlands

πŸš’ 1215 on route towards Marsden Moor (although we were barely out of the village) and the Control room mobilises us to a Domestic automatic fire alarm in Golcar. Proved to be some well cooked bacon which set off the occupants Caroline linked alarm system.

β˜€οΈ 1235 We're heading for the moors again, stopping by Eastergate, Redbrook, Brun Clough, Mount Road and Butterley where we speak to visitors and take details of flytipping to report on return to station. We stopped briefly on route and 2 local residents assured us that they never baa-be-que on the moorland or open spaces in Kirklees!

⛽️ 1345 Time to fuel up and then get back to station and pop our gear away, ready for the next call out πŸ“Ÿ

At Slaithwaite Fire Station, on-call firefighters are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
They are mums and dads.
Brothers and sisters.
Friends, neighbours, workmates.
People who step forward when someone’s worst day becomes reality.

We are looking for dedicated local people to join our on-call firefighting team β€” people with courage, commitment, and community spirit. You don’t need firefighting experience. You just need the drive to help others and the willingness to train.
As an on-call firefighter, you’ll:
β€’ Protect your local community
β€’ Learn lifesaving skills
β€’ Build confidence and teamwork
β€’ Earn additional income
β€’ Be part of something bigger than yourself

This role fits around your existing life and career. Many of our firefighters balance the role alongside family life and full-time jobs.

EMPLOYERS β€” YOUR SUPPORT SAVES LIVES
Behind every on-call firefighter is an employer who chose to support their community.
By allowing employees to respond to emergencies when needed, local businesses become a vital part of the emergency response network across the Colne Valley.

Supporting an on-call firefighter can:
β€’ Develop leadership, resilience, and decision-making skills in your staff
β€’ Build stronger, more confident employees
β€’ Demonstrate real community commitment
β€’ Enhance your reputation as a socially responsible employer
β€’ Strengthen local safety and resilience
The skills firefighters bring back into the workplace β€” calm under pressure, teamwork, communication, problem solving β€” benefit every business.
This is more than a role.
It’s pride.
It’s purpose.
It’s protecting the place we call home.
Could you answer the call?

Slaithwaite crews were mobilised to support 2 Huddersfield crews at Scrapyard fire in Milnsbridge. This was make pumps 4, also supported by Rastrick. Fire measured approx 10m x 10m x 10m of scrap material. Fire crews used a combination of upto 4 large jets and ground monitors whilst on site staff used their machinery to move the scrap from the main pile to where it could be fully extinguished.

00:30 Crews remain on scene.

01:30 The incident has now been reduced to 3 fire appliances. Crews continue to use 4 large jets on the fire whilst on site staff work to move the scrap. If you live nearby, please keep doors and windows shut.

Wed 29th April 2026

1830: 🫑 It's our regular training night and the crew have gathered at station. Our duties for the evening have been detailed out on parade and our PPE has been checked βœ”οΈ

1835: πŸ”₯ Fire call - Moorland Wildfire reported in the Wainstalls area of Halifax, Slaithwaite and Keighley attending with their wildfire units (the Argocat all-terrain vehicles) and their appliances to support alongside the local crew from Halifax station. Halifax found this to be a grass fire measuring approx. 20m x 20m. They used backpacks to extinguish and stood us down just before arriving πŸš’

2000: πŸ«– We're back on station and joining an online meeting led by HR so we make a quick cup of tea/coffee/bovril and settle in to the big screen in the training room πŸ–₯

2011: πŸ”₯ Fire call - that meeting was short-lived as we're mobilised by the Control Room to Bradford BD4 to a building fire. Initial crews there have requested 15 fire engines and supporting appliances attend the scene (in fire service speak, this is a make-up, "Make Pumps 15") - the nearest available fire engines are sent from across the whole of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. On arrival 2 crew donned breathing apparatus (BA) and made our way with our officer in charge to the command point where we were directed to the BA officer near sector 2. The other 2 crew members awaited further instruction and were soon utilised to support the supply of water to the incident using large bore (89mm) hose from Otley Fire Station's hose layer.

0055: πŸ’§ The crew of Mirfield Fire Station have arrived as part of an 8 pump relief and take our place in the water relay, allowing us to return to base πŸ”™

0200: ⛽️ After stopping for fuel on the return journey, we're back in Slawit - time to complete the paperwork and carry out our post incident cleaning and fire engine checks πŸ“‹

0215: πŸ’€ It's fair to say we're a little tired now so we all return to our homes and families (as quietly as possible 🀫!) and wonder when the next call will come πŸ“Ÿ Good night!
