Todays Green Party cleanup in Ashbrow at the Red Doles Play Area was a huge success!

16 people out to help tidy up a neglected play area and surrounding paths, making it a safer and cleaner environment for the local community to use.

25 full bags of rubbish were collected, weeds and brambles cut back, and Kirklees Council have removed two damged bench seats and installed a new bin to help keep the area tidy.

Some great conversations with residents and really showing the huge difference that electing hard working Green Councillors makes.

“Reform’s Flag Policy is divisive and an unnecessary diversion” says Kirklees Green Leader

Kirklees Reform’s Leader Councillor Sarah Wood has announced a policy specifying which flags will be flown on Kirklees Civic Buildings.

Councillor Andrew Cooper, Leader of the Opposition on Kirklees Council said,

“Kirklees Reform’s new flag policy is divisive, unnecessary and a waste of time

“With so many problems facing the people of Kirklees it is disappointing that the first thing Reform decided to do is create division when there are so many other issues that need their attention.

“The Council is facing an overspend in its budget of £13.6 million, demand for services for elderly and vulnerable people is soaring. Flytipping and the state of Kirklees roads continue to be big issues of concern in our communities yet the first thing Reform do is try to whip up division over which flags we do or don’t fly on Council buildings

“Under the previous Kirklees protocol on which flags should be raised on Town Halls it would be a decision between the Kirklees Mayor, the Council’s Chief Executive and the Leader of the Council. Cllr Sarah Wood as Leader of the Council would still have a say over what flags would have been flown anyway. So why the need for this policy?

“I guess the intended targets of this Reform policy will be the Pride flag and flags expressing support for Ukraine and Palestine. The fact is that Kirklees has never raised a Ukraine or Palestine flag and when the Pride flag has been raised on Town Halls there hasn’t been an outcry or demands it be taken down. As Ukrainian and Palestinian flags have not been raised on Kirklees Council buildings you have to wonder what the real point is behind Reform’s Flag Policy. This announcement simply stokes division in our communities and is a diversion from the real issues that they should be dealing with.

“There are real issues with having hard and fast rules regarding flags. In the past we have flown the Irish tricola on St Patrick’s Day and that is appreciated by the Irish Community or the Jamaican flag on their Independence Day. Flying these flags once a year doesn’t diminish our sovereignty as a country, it just shows that we recognise a community exists and we mark that, The same applies to the LGBTIQ community and flying the Pride flag.

“As Reform is keen to have a policy on flags, will it also have a policy on removing flags attached without Council permission to street lighting columns. The people who put up Union Jacks and St Georges flags clearly have a political agenda but will Reform just turn a blind eye if it is an expression of attitudes they approve of?

“I have always been suspicious of parties that mix up politics with patriotism. Politics is about ideas and solving difficult problems. The fact that the first thing Reform does in Kirklees is to have a policy on which flags we fly indicates a lack of ideas about how to address the real issues they face running the Council.”

Our Ashbrow Councillors will be leading a cleanup of Red Doles play area and the footpath leading up to it.

We’d love as many people to come join as possible - whether you’re a member of the Green Party or not. Lets all get stuck in to look after our communities.

Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and don’t forget to bring suitable gloves 🧤 (Pickers and bags will be provided)
