Happy Volunteers Week! 🌟

This week we are celebrating our incredible volunteers. Hear what Joanne had to say about her time volunteering at Kirklees Museums.

Do you have a favourite object from one of the museums or museum site?
"My favourite object in the collections is a beautiful small alabaster pot, together with its fragile lid, which still contains black kohl used by an Ancient Egyptian to make up their eyes. How fantastic is that?"

What have you gained from volunteering with us?
"I have met some amazing and knowledgeable people, becoming good friends and learning so much from them about the past. It never stops! I get to go behind the scenes in our museums which really satisfies my curiosity about what’s behind closed doors."

What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering?
"Go for it. If you enjoy history, your enthusiasm is all you need. Everyone is so helpful and only too willing to pass on their expertise and experience. You get so much in return from giving your time."

You can read Joanne’s full answers in our Volunteer Week blog, available on our website!

"A sense of well being, it’s good for the soul. I’ve made friends, and it keeps me fit. It’s good for your mental health, and gives me a sense of purpose and helping the community."

What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering?
"Make the first step. Sometimes doing something new can seem hard, but once you’ve taken the first step it’s easier than you think."
