🇬🇧🇧🇬
Members of the band were pleased to spend time today with musicians from the National Guard Unit in Bulgaria during a joint rehearsal in Sofia.

The visit forms part of our support to the British Embassy Sofia ahead of celebrations marking His Majesty The King's Offical Birthday.

Musicians from both bands will perform together on Thursday afternoon in front of the National Palace of Culture. If you are in Sofia, keep an eye on the Embassy’s channels for further details.

✨ Today we proudly supported the 21 Gun Salute for His Majesty King Charles at York Museum Gardens. Even the sun made a brief appearance! 🌿

❔Did you know... the 21 Gun Salute stems from naval tradition when, on entry to a foreign harbour, a ship would fire seven times to signify its peaceful intent. The guns in the harbour would then fire 3 rounds for every shot fired by the ship, totalling 21 shots overall. Nowadays, gun salutes are fired as sign of respect to the monarch, often on special occasions such as anniversaries or birthdays.

🎼 Musician spotlight - Musician Alex Aver-Howdle 🎹

Originally from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Alex studied at the University of Huddersfield from 2021–2025, graduating with both a BMus Music Degree and a PGCE in Secondary Music Education. During his studies, he built an impressive performance résumé, appearing at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham, and The Glasshouse Centre for Music.

Since joining The Band in 2024, Alex has become a valued member of the percussion team. One of the aspects he enjoys most about being in the Army Reserve is the variety of opportunities it provides, from performing in venues such as York Minster and Middlesbrough Cathedral, to travelling overseas to places such as Cyprus and Bulgaria. However, some of his proudest moments have come from performing at passing out parades, playing a part in celebrating recruits as they complete their training.

When asked what advice he would give to anyone considering joining The Band, Alex says: "Do it. Be bold and brave and take that first step. I was hesitant at first, but it was one of the best decisions I've made in my musical career."

Aside from music, Alex is a self-confessed aviation enthusiast who loves plane spotting and flying. More recently, he's also taken up running and is enjoying finding his stride – when the weather is on his side! 🏃‍♂️‍➡️

We're certainly glad Alex decided to join us, and we hope he'll continue to be a notable part of The Band for many years to come.

Over the last four days, we have been proud to support Freedom Parades and services in Keighley, Halifax, York and Richmond as part of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment's 20th anniversary celebrations.

This significant milestone is a testament to two decades of service and dedication. It is always a privilege to stand alongside the soldiers and officers of the 2nd Battalion and join in recognising their continued commitment.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this special anniversary.

Congratulations to Musician Peasgood on successfully completing her basic training at ATR Grantham.

Over the past 15 days she has taken part in an intensive residential “Battle Camp” completing training in fieldcraft, weapon handling and live-fire exercises ahead of today’s passing out parade.

A huge thank you to the Nottinghamshire Band of the Royal Engineers for accommodating members of our band and helping us surprise her at the parade this morning.

LCpl April Farthing was recently supporting a series of burial, rededication and remembrance services across Commonwealth War Graves in France.

These services included the burial of both identified and unknown soldiers, the rededication of Lt George Kenneth Steinberg of the Machine Gun Corps and the blessing of remains recovered from the battlefields.

To play a part in laying these soldiers to rest with dignity, over a century after their sacrifice, is a privilege we do not take lightly.

We will remember them.
