Councillor Update; Hucknall West Residents.

Today, I joined many other residents shopping at the Whyburn Precinct off Nabbs Lane.

While there, I bought a few items and took the opportunity to speak with local businesses to ask whether they needed any support from me as the County Councillor for Hucknall West.

It was particularly nice to meet the couple who run Premier Industrial Supplies at the precinct and hear more about their business and the work they do locally.

Our local shops, petrol stations, cafés, supermarkets and takeaways are an important part of our community. Let’s continue to support and patronise our local businesses wherever we can. 🛍️☕️🍴

Street lighting concerns in Hucknall West 💡

Out and about across Hucknall West today, and couldn’t help but notice a fair few street lights still switched on well into daylight hours — burning away for no one, sunshine and all. Not exactly the most efficient use of electricity, and clearly a sign something in the system isn’t working as it should.

Streets affected include Rockwood, Hill Crest and Common Lane, among others — a decent little cluster, so likely more than just one stray bulb having an off day.

I’ll be passing these locations on to Emma at Via, who’ll get the details over to the inspection team so the faults can be properly looked into and sorted.

In the meantime, if you spot street lights unnecessarily on during the day anywhere else in the area, do let me know. The more eyes we’ve got on this, the quicker these things get picked up and fixed — think of it as community-powered fault-spotting. 👍

Street lighting concerns in Hucknall West 💡

Today, while out and about across Hucknall West, I noticed a number of street lights still on during the daytime something that clearly shouldn’t be happening.

I spotted lights on across several streets, including Rockwood, Hill Crest and Common Lane, among others.

I will be sending these locations over to Emma at Via, who will pass them on to the team of inspectors so they can investigate and ensure any faults are reported and addressed.

If you spot street lights that are unnecessarily on during the day, please let me know. Reporting these issues helps us make sure they are picked up and dealt with. 👍

Dear Hucknall West Residents

It was a real pleasure to attend Hucknall Day this year and to spend time with so many of our fantastic community groups and organisations.

From our local primary school representatives and the Hucknall Wildlife Team, Stuart of the wellness group, the NHS community team to Hucknall Baptist Church, the Blood Bikes group and all others, it was inspiring to see the dedication, passion and hard work that so many people put into making a difference in our community.

As your county councillor, I believe it is important not only to listen to our community groups, but also to understand what support they need and help create the right links and opportunities for them to grow.

I was particularly pleased to hear about the work of Trent Blood Bikes and their ambitions to expand their support in Kirkby and surrounding areas. I will ensure that the relevant links and opportunities to help them scale up their work are followed up.

I will also continue to engage with the Hucknall Wildlife Team and look at how we can support the excellent work they are doing to protect and enhance our local environment.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered and helped make Hucknall Day such a success. Events like this remind us of what makes our communities special and people coming together, supporting one another and making a real difference.

I look forward to continuing to work with our local groups and residents to make sure your voices are heard and your contributions are recognised.

Brilliant gift indeed to us at the civic office and the entire County Council. Grateful indeed to the leader and everyone involved who ensured we received this lovely portrait of the King. Thank you 🙏

It was a real pleasure for myself and the Vice-Chairman, Councillor Dr John Doddy, to take receipt of a new portrait of His Majesty King Charles III earlier this week.

As Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, I’m proud to accept this portrait on behalf of the council. The King has a long-standing connection with Nottinghamshire, and it is particularly special to have this striking portrait as a reminder of the important role he plays in our national life.

It was also a lovely opportunity to reflect on the traditions and responsibilities that come with serving as Chairman. Our county has a proud history and strong links with the Royal Family, and I’m delighted to play my part in continuing those traditions.

The portrait will be framed and stand proudly in the Civic Suite at County Hall.

Today is Hucknall Community Day, a wonderful opportunity to connect with our community groups and enjoy live performances from our talented local stars. I was here at the event last year and truly enjoyed meeting many of the groups who work so hard to enrich our town.
I encourage everyone to take part as fully as they can and celebrate the spirit of community that makes Hucknall special. Congratulations to the Hucknall Rotary Club, a long standing pillar of service marking an incredible 100 years of commitment to our community.
A little bit of Hucknall history
Hucknall’s story stretches back centuries, with St Mary Magdalene’s Church retaining 12th century fabric and being the final resting place of Lord Byron. The town grew dramatically during the coal mining era, with mining becoming central to local life and employment. The railway arrived in 1848, further connecting Hucknall with the wider area. From its medieval beginnings, through its mining heritage, to the thriving community we have today, Hucknall has a proud history shaped by generations of local people.

📢 Highways Update for Hucknall West Residents

I have been informed by our officer Emma, Ashfield Manager for Via/ Nottinghamshire County Council that, as part of this year's major micro asphalt road maintenance programme, a number of roads in Hucknall have been rescheduled from this autumn to March 2027. The work will still be completed within the current financial year.

The affected roads are: ✅ Avon Avenue
✅ Hazel Grove
✅ Merlin Drive
✅ Royce Avenue
✅ Westland Avenue
✅ Westville Drive
✅ Wings Drive

The change has been made because micro asphalt treatments are weather-dependent. Moving these schemes to March helps ensure the best possible quality finish and provides flexibility should poor weather affect other scheduled works this autumn.

I appreciate residents may be disappointed by the delay, but this decision is intended to ensure the repairs are carried out under the most suitable conditions.

Dear Hucknall West Residents,

I was once again privileged to meet with many more residents of Ascot Drive to day as I canvassed for the the Party. It was lovely to see you all, and I am incredibly grateful for the warm, brilliant and polite hospitality you showed me. I truly cannot thank you enough. Reform UK is listening to the residents of Ascot Drive, and we are committed to representing your concerns and priorities.

Also, on Friday, I had the pleasure of attending Albany Primary School on Pasture Road on behalf of the Council, alongside the Mayor of Stapleford, to officially open their new road-crossing signage.

I would especially like to recognise and thank one of our Hucknall West residents who lives on Christchurch Road for the dedication, care and service she provides to the pupils at the school.

Dear Hucknall West Residents,

As part of my commitment to serving our community and Nottinghamshire as a whole, I had the honour and privilege of serving at Nottinghamshire County Council today, alongside the Mayor of Rushcliffe Borough Council, Cllr Richard Butler as we jointly led the Merchant Day celebrations at County Hall.

It was a beautiful and memorable event, bringing together people in celebration of our community, heritage and shared values.

Today, I took some time out to have my car checked at Lindleys Auto Center in Hucknall.

It’s always great to support our local businesses, whether that’s eating out, shopping locally, getting the car fixed, or using any of the many services our town has to offer. Every penny spent in Hucknall helps strengthen our local economy and contributes to a thriving economic ecosystem. 💙

It was also lovely meeting Jack and Kirsty, who went the extra mile to make sure I had a great customer experience. As Councillor for Hucknall West, I will continue to champion our local businesses and encourage residents to shop local, spend local and support Hucknall. 🛍️🚗☕
