๐Ÿ’š Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers ๐Ÿ’š

This Volunteer Week, we want to send a huge thanks and appreciation to everyone who helps care for our parks and green spaces.

From our regular volunteers and occasional helpers to our corporate groups and behind-the-scenes heroes โ€” weโ€™ve said it before and weโ€™ll say it again, we simply couldnโ€™t do it without you.

Weโ€™ve shared just a small snapshot of some of the fantastic work taking place, but to every volunteer: please know that Horsham District is a greener, more vibrant place because of your hard work, dedication and commitment.

Thank you for everything you do ๐Ÿ’š

We are looking for an Assistant Countryside Warden (Fixed Term Contract) to work across our Parks and Countryside estate, helping our warden team manage both urban and rural sites which are valuable for both wildlife and people.

This is a fun and varied role, that will include practical habitat and estate management, working with our small herd of livestock, biological recording and working with the public, volunteers and contractors.
As this role involves driving council vehicles, it is essential that you have a full UK and current driving licence.

Pathway Improvements at Chesworth Farm

Weโ€™ve recently improved the surfaced pathway between New Town Nine Acres and Gravel Pit, making it easier and more accessible for everyone to enjoy. The hope is even during the wettest of winters the path will still be above the ground water level.

This work was carried out with the fantastic help of Horsham Green Gym, whose volunteers gave their time and energy to help enhance this wellโ€‘used route. Thank you to everyone involved for supporting access to our countryside spaces.

๐Ÿฎ Livestock Update ๐Ÿฎ

Please note the five British White cattle have been moved from Chambers Field into the public fields of Great Horsham Hill and Jenny Bare Legs.

Grazing the cattle on wildflower grassland plays a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and preserving traditional landscapes. These hardy, native cattle are well-suited to low-intensity grazing, which helps control dominant grasses and prevents scrub from taking over, allowing a wider variety of wildflowers to thrive. This, in turn, supports pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as birds and other wildlife that depend on diverse plant life.

Unlike intensive farming methods, this form of conservation grazing works with natural processes, improving soil health and sustaining ecosystems over time.

๐Ÿฎ The Cows have Moo-ved ๐Ÿ„

Yesterday our Countryside Wardens shepherded our herd of five British White Cattle from Tip Field to Chambers Field.
This area is closed off - so you don't need to worry about dogs being off-lead around them!

Please, however, *refrain from feeding them*!! They receive all the nutrients they need from the vegetation they consume, with the supplementary mineral lick, and salt lick helping to keep their nutrient levels balanced.

Please feel free to watch them graze this area as they are an essential component in our Land Management ~ Grazing the Land in a way that creates a mosaic of sward heights, which is perfect for life such as invertebrates to thrive!
We look forward to seeing you at the Farm, and hope you have a wonderful day! ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ Orchard Restoration ๐ŸŽ

Our wardens and volunteers were hard at work in the orchard last week, wrapping up the last of the Winter tasks before March arrived. The mature apple trees have now been fully pruned, and weโ€™ve added several new Sussex varieties to enrich the habitat. A huge thank you to everyone who helped us restore the orchard, to keep it thriving for years to come.

๐ŸฎHave you heard the moos?๐Ÿฎ The British White cattle have been moved from Great Horsham Hill to the Tip Fields for the next few weeks. Thank you for your consideration whilst the cattle were grazing the public fields. Cattle grazing helps to improve the floral diversity of the Farm so is an important part of the management of the site. ๐Ÿ“ท A. Peach

Would you like to get involved with biological recording projects at Chesworth Farm?

Weโ€™re looking for volunteers to help us with two projects this winter.

Firstly, join us next Tuesday 27 January and help in the search for the eggs of the elusive Brown Hairstreak butterfly.
Often found on blackthorn shoots, volunteers will learn how to spot these tiny specimens and remove them carefully for safe keeping, enabling them to hatch safely later in spring.

The second project is to record farmland birds using the four bird feeders installed around the farm. Each recording session will take approximately 30 minutes.

For each of these projects, no experience is necessary as full training will be given. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
