🔥 Commercial kitchen fire protection: we might want to talk about the technology..
Protecting your commercial kitchen from fire is a good idea. It protects people, property, and business continuity — and it also keeps insurers smiling 🙂

What many operators don’t realise is just how many different kitchen fire-suppression systems are on the market… and how meaningful some of those differences really are.

Commercial kitchen fire systems emerged in the 1960s, during the American fast-food boom 🍟, when deep-fat frying became widespread. Large volumes of cooking oil present a serious risk — many common oils auto-ignite around 180°C, and when they go, they go fast and big. Hence the need for dedicated suppression systems.

Here’s the surprising bit:

Many of the systems designed back then — using mechanical cables, gravity and fusible links (a detection concept dating back to ancient Greece 🏛️ — no pun intended) — are still protecting today’s energy-optimised, digitally controlled commercial kitchens.

Nowhere else in active fire protection do we rely quite so heavily on technology that hasn’t meaningfully changed in 60+ years.

Which brings me to Corporation STRIKE® 🔥
AMEREX STRIKE is a globally available, UL300-listed, genuinely 21st-century kitchen fire-protection system. It integrates with modern building monitoring and alarm platforms and — unlike legacy systems — can be monitored 24/7 to confirm it is fully operational.

Quick test:
Walk up to your current kitchen fire-suppression system. Can you tell if it’s operational right now? 🤔With AMEREX STRIKE you can. Important.

When protecting modern hotels, restaurants, or family businesses, it’s worth knowing that you now have a choice. Fire-protection technology has moved on since 1962 — and kitchens don’t need to rely on ancient-Greek-era detection concepts anymore.

✅ Fire Safety Managers value AMEREX for its system integration.
✅ Fire Risk Assessors value its verifiability between service visits.
✅ Cleaning contractors and major food chains value it for one simple reason: no fusible metal links to snag and trigger costly accidental discharges 🧼🚫

Modern kitchens deserve modern fire protection. You all deserve STRIKE!

Equipro Fire Protection is the UK master distributor for AMEREX Strike in the Uk and we normally deliver from our state of the art warehouse near Gatwick within 48 hours. We ship across the UK, Europe and beyond.

🔥 Free Fire Risk Assessment with Every Amerex Kitchen Fire Suppression System - Hospitality Sector Fire Awareness Campaign -‼️*

Recent fires in the hospitality sector have led to loss of life, serious injury, prosecutions, and business failure.
In many cases, the root cause wasn’t malice — it was non-compliance with fire safety regulations, through misunderstanding, complacency, or poor advice. But that doesn't save business owners from fines or jail.

⚠️ Fire safety is not routinely checked when alcohol licences are issued.
🧑‍🚒 Fire & Rescue Services do not routinely inspect premises.

🫤 Yet when something goes wrong, responsibility sits squarely with the Responsible Person. The building owner, the building operator, the business owner etc

✅ That’s why Equipro Ltd, as committed members of Fire Aware, is launching a Fire Safety Awareness & Compliance Campaign for hospitality operators to help them better understand their obligations.

Our Cold Fire Technology stops li-ion battery fires at waste & recycling facilities

16/01/2026

🔥 Deep-seated fires within waste and recycling facilities present a high-severity loss scenario due to delayed detection, limited suppressant pe*******on, prolonged cooling requirements, and elevated probability of re-ignition. ♻️🚛

🔋 These conditions are increasingly associated with embedded lithium-ion batteries and compacted combustible waste.

Effective mitigation is dependent on:
🔶 Early detection,
🔶 Rapid delivery of cooling media to the seat of the fire, and
🔶 Sustained temperature suppression below re-ignition thresholds, while controlling runoff and secondary environmental impact.

Cold Fire®, as deployed by Equipro Ltd across portable extinguishers, hose reels, water-mist systems, sprinkler and deluge systems, and high-output water cannons, is a fluorine-free wetting and encapsulating agent designed to enhance water’s effectiveness in these environments.

When correctly proportioned and applied, Cold Fire-enhanced water:
🔹 Reduces surface tension to improve pe*******on into porous and compacted waste
🔹Increases the rate of heat absorption and sustained cooling at the fire seat
🔹Encapsulates flammable vapours, smoke particulates, and odour-forming hydrocarbons
🔹Reduces overall water demand in many scenarios, supporting runoff and environmental impact control
🔹Assists in limiting re-ignition and fire recurrence

👍 UK Industry guidance addressing lithium-ion battery fire risk recognises the application of wetting agents — specifically Cold Fire — in waste-sector fire-protection strategies, particularly within automated systems using fixed pipework and water cannons, where controlled delivery and staged application are used to minimise loss severity and operational disruption.

💰 From a loss-prevention perspective, Cold Fire-enhanced systems, when integrated with appropriate detection and response protocols, support risk reduction, loss-severity mitigation, environmental compliance, and improved site resilience.

💘 Cold Fire can also be retrofitted to any existing water based suppression systems, transforming plain water systems into Cold Fire boosted fire eaters..

🔥 Fire and Gas Are One Risk: Why EQUINOX Hybrid-HP Changes How Outdoor BESS Are Protected 🔋

As lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are installed closer to communities, many projects are now proposing two separate protection systems:

• 🧯 A clean agent (such as FK-5-12) to knock down visible flames
• 🌫️ A separate inert gas system to flush flammable gases released before, during, and after the event
On paper, this looks comprehensive.
In practice, it introduces more equipment, more interfaces, more space, more cost — and more assumptions during an emergency.

The core issue is simple:
⚠️ Lithium-ion battery failures do not present as a “fire phase” followed neatly by a “gas phase”.
Heat build-up, escalation from cell to cell, and the release of flammable and toxic gases occur together and evolve over time. Gas release often starts before flames and can continue long after flames are extinguished. Independent research now shows that the duration and volume of gas release — not just visible fire — are key drivers of off-site risk for outdoor BESS installations.

This matters to Fire & Rescue Services, insurers, planners, Environmental Health teams, and environmental regulators, because risk does not stop at the container wall.
🔧 EQUINOX Hybrid-HP Mist systems were developed specifically to address this reality.
Rather than combining two unrelated suppression systems, EQUINOX Hybrid-HP integrates all critical functions into one coherent response:
• 💧 High-performance water mist enhanced with Cold Fire rapidly removes heat, limiting escalation from cell to cell
• 🔬 The Cold Fire agent actively suppresses and encapsulates flammable vapours and toxic gases at the point they are released
• 🟦 Following the initial mist discharge, the system transitions to a controlled nitrogen (N₂) phase. Powered by Cold Fire, EQUINOX Hybrid-HP typically begins this stage after approximately 20 minutes and continues discharging nitrogen for up to 90 minutes, actively flushing the enclosure to manage residual off-gassing as the batteries stabilise
This is achieved without requiring a separate clean-agent system, a second inert-gas installation, or reliance on mechanical ventilation to “dilute” the problem away.

✅ The result:
• 📦 Smaller system footprint
• 🔗 Fewer interfaces and failure points
• ⚙️ Lower material and installation complexity
• 📊 More predictable performance under emergency conditions

As outdoor BESS installations come under increasing planning, insurance, and environmental scrutiny, attention is shifting decisively from the number of systems specified to how effectively risk is controlled beyond the site boundary. Integrated approaches that address heat, fire, and gas together are rapidly establishing themselves as the benchmark for robust and responsible system design.

This is one of my favourite photos of the recent Li-ion Battery fire extinguishing tests with Cold Fire. There are many people who still think that thermal run-away cannot be stopped. This image showing burnt out and uninvolved li-ion cells is all the evidence needed proving cell to cell propagation can be quickly and easily stopped.
This specific test fire was the NTA-8133 certification test for a 9L Water Fire extinguisher containing 3% Cold Fire additive. A video of the test fire with this sample is in first comment below.
This test was conducted on exposed cells according to the standard but other successful and certified fire tests were conducted on enclosed battery packs (to a test method set down by APPLUS+) which were also suppressed and stopped. That's because of the unique and different way that Cold Fire suppresses and controls thermal run-away fires - follow me and I'll post more details about how this remarkable water additive transforms ordinary water into a super powered fire extinguishing agent for multiple classes of fire and especially li-ion battery cells AND packs.
The EQUINOX brand fire extinguishers are EN-3 and NTA-8133 certified.

There's a fluorine free AFFF alternative that is also certified to suppress li-ion battery thermal run away fires. It is called Cold Fire.

On October 2, 2025, the European Commission took a decisive step toward a cleaner, safer future by officially adopting Regulation (EU) 2025/1988, marking the beginning of the end for fluorine-added firefighting foams such as AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam). 🔥 Behind the scenes at Equipro R&D
There are places over the Pacific Ocean — around the Point Nemo region — where the nearest safe landing can be five to six hours away under ETOPS/EDTO rules.

At Equipro Ltd, our mission is clear: to develop suppression technology that can control and cool an onboard li-ion powered device fire long enough for an aircraft to land safely — no matter how far it has left to run.

In this short mobile-phone R&D clip, our technical partners carried out a live lithium-ion battery experiment using an EQUINOX water-based extinguisher charged with the Cold Fire additive.

This wasn’t a staged certification test — it was real R&D, exploring different nozzle geometries and spray patterns to optimise extinguishing performance while keeping the system as compact and lightweight as possible.

Cold Fire is already UL-listed for Class A & B fires, certified to NFPA 18A, and APPLUS-certified for suppressing thermal runaway in various delivery systems.
Now we’re going further — developing the smallest, lightest, fluorine-free, non-toxic Halon replacement extinguisher that could be a genuine Halon 1211 alternative for aviation and defence applications.

Our target: a stringently tested and certified multi-class unit effective on A, B, C, D, F/K and Li-ion fires, safe on energised equipment, and capable of mission-critical performance at 40,000 ft.

At Equipro Ltd, we’re not just building to existing standards — we’re pushing beyond them.
Cold Fire technology is suppressing the fires today that tomorrow’s standards will be written around.

This is what makes Equipro unique:
🔬 Regular, repeatable, real-world R&D tackling existing fire problems — not just theory.
💡 Practical innovation aimed at delivering proven, deployable solutions that keep people safe in the toughest conditions.

⚠️KITCHEN DESIGN CONSULTANTS - The importance of complying to Article 17 of the Fire Safety Order ⚠️

This is a conversation I think the food service design and consultancy community needs to have more openly—because it’s not just a technical issue. It’s a compliance one.

When fire suppression systems are specified for kitchens, are they helping the client meet their legal duties under the Fire Safety Order—or introducing risk they may not even be aware of?

1️⃣ 7️⃣ Understanding the Fire Safety Order—and Why Article 17 Matters

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) is the legal framework for fire safety in all non-domestic premises in England and Wales, with near-identical duties in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Responsible Person (usually the owner, operator, or employer) is required to:
🔥 Take general fire precautions (Article 8)
🔥 Maintain a suitable fire risk assessment (Article 9)
🔥 Ensure and prove all fire safety systems are in efficient working order—at all times (Article 17)

And that last point matters.
1️⃣ 7️⃣Article 17 doesn’t just require that systems are maintained—it requires that their operational readiness can be demonstrated at any time. That means right now, not just on the day of the last service.

➡️ Where Real-World Risk Creeps In
Some systems help make that easy. Others don’t.
For example:
😢 Cartridge-actuated systems without pressure gauges or monitoring switches can silently fail
😢 Appliance-specific nozzle layouts may not reflect real kitchen changes
😢 A lack of interim checks or logs leaves no proof the system still works

The result? A system that looks fine—but has no way to prove it’s ready. I call this silent failure. 🔕

This puts the Responsible Person in a vulnerable position:
👮 Legally (if the system can’t be proven operational)
🔥 Operationally (if fire suppression fails)
💲 Financially (if insurance challenges compliance or cover)

🧑‍🏫 Why This Matters to Consultants, Designers and Specifiers
If you're involved in recommending, describing, or even influencing the type of kitchen fire suppression system installed, it’s worth taking a moment to ask: Are you helping protect the client from downstream compliance risk?

🧑‍🍳 I work closely with food service consultants, designers, and system buyers to help them:
Understand how fire compliance applies in practice
Identify where a system may not meet regulatory or operational expectations
Choose approaches that genuinely support compliance

While I (and many others in the industry) supply systems that meet these expectations, my main concern is broader:
To encourage the industry to stop normalising legacy systems that can no longer be proven fit for purpose.

If you’d like a conversation—formally or informally—about how to reduce future compliance risk in kitchen projects, I’d be happy to help.

🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Fires & EV Charging Stations – An Update for Fire Safety Professionals

Hi everyone,

There’s been a lot of interest recently around EV charging stations, lithium-ion battery fire risks, and fire extinguishers — especially from professionals working in fire safety, risk assessment, and suppression systems. It’s encouraging to see the industry taking such an active interest in what is, without doubt, one of the most technically challenging fire risks we now face.

At Equipro Ltd, we work extensively in this area, and we’ve seen firsthand how conventional fire extinguishers and standard suppression systems simply aren’t equipped to deal with lithium-ion thermal runaway. These fires behave very differently to traditional fuel fires, and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for the other.

That’s why we’re putting together a free, CPD-accredited webinar for anyone who wants a clearer understanding of what solutions have been independently tested and certified to work — and why certain approaches fall short.

For now, here’s a quick show-and-tell of the tested systems we’ve deployed, all of which have been subjected to full-scale live fire testing by APPLUS+, one of Europe’s leading fire performance certification bodies. All were verified not just for extinguishing the flames, but for halting thermal runaway and preventing reignition — something conventional systems were unable to do in side-by-side comparisons.

💡 Why active cooling is essential
Many systems — including conventional fire extinguishers and suppression systems — are designed to deal with surface flames. But with lithium-ion batteries, the real danger lies inside the cells, where the fire is driven by intense internal heat and pressure.

Unless that heat is actively removed, the battery can continue to escalate internally, often leading to reignition minutes or even hours later. Systems and extinguishers that cannot absorb sufficient heat simply don’t address the root of the problem.

This is why we always caution against solutions that only "knock down flames" but lack the capability to cool, contain and control thermal runaway. Firefighters, building managers, and first responders deserve systems that not only suppress, but stabilise and safeguard.

👥 Join our CPD-accredited webinar
If you’d like to learn more — including how lithium-ion fires behave, how to evaluate credible suppression options, and what performance-based testing actually involves — we’re running a free CPD-accredited webinar very soon.

Just drop a comment or send me a message, and I’ll send over the details. Whether you're a fire extinguisher supplier, risk assessor, or simply looking to stay current, we’ll make sure you leave the session with practical, fact-based insights you can use.
