Thank you to Martin Browne, who shared these lovely photos from a wander around the nature reserve during the Deeping Lakes open day on Sunday, organised by our fantastic Bourne Area Group.

Martin said: " It was great to see such a broad range of what nature has to offer there. Well done to the management and volunteers for the wonderful work they do there."

🔊 Sound on! Did you know this could happen?

Enjoy this incredible video from Shorebird Warden Mike ( ) of chicks calling from inside their eggs within our shorebird sanctuary at Gibraltar Point.

"We were just completing the morning monitoring and nest checks in the sanctuary area and heard chirping coming from one of our oystercatcher platforms. Expecting to see chicks we chanced a quick look, but no, just the four eggs that have been there this past few weeks.

However the chirping continued and looking closer I could see one of them (top left) had a small hole and was beginning to hatch. Another also had a small crack in it. The chirping was actually coming from the chicks whilst still inside the eggs calling to their mum 😮. There is no adult bird calling in this clip - all you can hear is the calling from the chicks. Rest assured we left them to it and will check in on them tomorrow.

A beautiful moment that’s had me smiling all day 😊"

Today is 🌿

Saltmarshes are some of the UK's most important coastal habitats, supporting a remarkable variety of specialised plants, insects, birds, fish and other wildlife. They also help store carbon, improve water quality, and provide natural protection from coastal flooding and erosion.

Through the Wilder Humber programme, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust is helping restore and enhance saltmarsh habitats across the Humber region. A key part of this work is the development of our saltmarsh and sand dune nursery, where we are collecting, growing and seed banking native coastal plants to support future restoration projects.

This lovely photo of a muntjac returning from a brief dip in the sea at Gibraltar Point was taken by shorebird warden Mike Watts. Trail cam footage from the southern end of the sanctuary area has revealed just how often both muntjac and roe deer have been venturing out to this far edge of the reserve. The cameras are extremely useful for highlighting predation, disturbance and trampling risks during the nesting season, but also give us some fascinating insights into wildlife behaviour. While deer are strong swimmers, they typically enter the water to escape a threat or reach a food source or new territory, so their actions at Gibraltar Point are something of a mystery.

"It poses a very interesting question as to why the deer are drawn to the sea," says Mike. "Is it simply to cool down during the hot spell we’ve experienced, does the saltwater help alleviate parasites, or does the saltwater and dune vegetation provide minerals they are not getting elsewhere? Whatever the reason it's still quite surreal to witness."

Our latest podcast episode is out now!

This is the second in our series of 'a beginner's guide to' and focuses on identifying warblers with Gibraltar Point Warden Richard Doan. Learn the basics from calls and songs to easily identifiable characteristics of this group of birds.

There are 9 species of warbler found at Gibraltar Point; how many do you think Melvyn and Richard found whilst exploring the different habitats across the reserve?

The next episode in our 'a beginner's guide to' series with bird ex...

On a recent site visit to Crowle Moor, some of our Education and Communications teams got the chance to hop aboard a heritage train at the wonderful Crowle Peatland Railway. We were even lucky enough to spot a herd of red deer as we trundled down the track. The volunteer-run railway has an engine shed crammed full of fascinating history, as well as a lovely little cafe, outdoor seating and toilet facilities - perfect for a stop-off before or after a walk on the nature reserve. You can even catch the train for the first leg!

This is a fantastic time to see Crowle Moor, which as a wild peat bog habitat can be pretty inaccessible for parts of the year. Even now, when it's drier (but still very springy) underfoot, we would recommend robust waterproof footwear, as well as trousers and plenty of insect repellent. And for your own safety, as well as to protect the rare and fragile species here, please do stick to the main paths. Find out more at lincstrust.org.uk/nature-reserves/crowle-moor

Crowle Peatland Railway is open on set dates throughout the year, with a number of special events, including this weekend (6 and 7 June), when they are hosting a summer craft fair alongside the train rides.
