There has been some real progress on broadband rollout across our constituency, with current Openreach plans now expected to connect nearly 3,000 additional homes to gigabit-capable broadband.
However, there are also serious challenges emerging, including the cancellation of remaining Project Gigabit rollout in our area and the indefinite pause to Openreach’s planned rollout to the Frensham exchange.
Fast and reliable broadband is essential infrastructure, yet too many communities across Farnham, Bordon, Haslemere, Liphook and our surrounding villages remain among the poorest connected in the country.
The planned additional investment from Openreach is welcome and builds on progress already made in communities such as Passfield, where gigabit coverage now exceeds 84%. That level of connectivity should be the minimum standard across our area.
However, the recent decision by Government and CityFibre to cancel the remaining Project Gigabit rollout across Hampshire and West Sussex is deeply concerning. Project Gigabit is the public subsidy programme supporting delivery in rural communities.
The Government’s position is that sufficient commercial rollout is now planned across Hampshire. While that may apply in more other areas, it does not reflect the reality across many parts of our constituency, where some exchange areas would still remain below 30% coverage.
Openreach's indefinite pause to its commercial rollout in the Frensham exchange area fundamentally changes the situation, but strengthens my case for Frensham to now be included within Project Gigabit in Surrey.
I have therefore written in detail to the Minister for Digital Economy and requested an urgent meeting with Ministers, officials, Openreach and CityFibre to review the position and ensure our communities are not overlooked.
The Government remains committed to achieving 99% nationwide gigabit coverage. My focus is ensuring that Farnham and Bordon is firmly within that 99%.
