An early start to a hot Bank Holiday Monday for Staithes CRT.

At 00:11, the team were tasked to search for a missing person believed to be somewhere between Staithes and Sandsend.

We were joined by Whitby Coastguard Redcar Coastguard Rescue Team Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team North Yorkshire Policeshire Police, and NPAS 73 (Police Helicopter).

Search teams were rapidly deployed, including a police search dog, while NPAS searched from the air.
The person was subsequently located.

All services were stood down at 04:10, just as the sun began to rise.

This incident was an excellent example of multi-agency collaboration โ€” well done to all involved.

Since then, after only a few hoursโ€™ sleep, we have attended a second incident in Redcar.

With hot weather predicted for the coming days, we ask everyone to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and take care near the coastline and cliffs.

๐ŸšจIf you see somebody in difficulty along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.๐Ÿšจ

Tonight, we were joined by Redcar and Whitby Coastguard Teams for an excellent presentation delivered by Jordan, Team Leader from our Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Bridlington (Humber Coastguard).

It was an incredibly informative session, giving everyone a real insight into the work, roles, and capabilities of the MRCC.

Jordan, an experienced Team Leader and also the Station Officer at Bridlington Coastguard, shared his knowledge and expertise to help the teams better understand the command structure within the MRCC, how emergency calls are handled both on land and at sea, what is considered when a call is received, and the importance of Rescue Teams providing accurate information during incidents.

Following the presentation, the group split into teams and were given incident scenarios. Acting as MRCC operatives, they had just ten minutes to discuss the type of incident, assess the level of urgency, and decide what assets would be required.

Remarkably, a regular MRCC operator would complete all of this in just 30 seconds!

Covering most of the East Coast, Humber Coastguard can become extremely busy, and the skills, knowledge, and professionalism of those in the MRCC can often make all the difference to the outcome of an incident.

On behalf of everyone who attended tonightโ€™s session, thank you to all MRCC operators for the vital work you do.

A special thank you to Jordan for giving up his time to deliver such an insightful and engaging presentation.

๐Ÿšจ Play your part! ๐Ÿšจ
In any emergency, the caller can play a vital role in the outcome of an incident. By staying calm, answering questions clearly, confirming the exact location, giving the number of casualties, and making operators aware of any hazards, you provide crucial information that helps the MRCC assess the situation quickly and deploy the correct assets.

๐ŸšจRemember, in an Emergency at the Coast, call 999 and ask for The Coastguard!!๐Ÿšจ

Farewell and good luck Staithes Bravo!!

Tonight, the team came together at the station to say farewell and wish our Deputy Station Officer all the very best for the future.

Alex (call sign Staithes Bravo) is moving into a full-time role with the Area Management Team โ€” a fantastic and well-deserved opportunity.

A regular leader in training, a calm and capable presence at incidents, and someone who always set the standard through professionalism and dedication, Alex will be greatly missed by us all.

Thankfully, itโ€™s not goodbye altogetherโ€” Alex will still be around the area and supporting crews on incidents, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside her in this new role.

Best of luck, Alex โ€” youโ€™ll smash it ๐Ÿ‘

Volunteering isnโ€™t about recognition. Itโ€™s about pushing ourselves, supporting those in need, and working together when it matters most.

However, last night, following on from training exercise, several Rescue Officers from Staithes and Whitby received a letter of appreciation from the Chief Coastguard for their actions during an incident we attended on 1st January 2026.

The incident was a great example of determination, resilience, teamwork, and JESIP in action โ€” with multiple agencies working together to achieve the best outcome.

A huge well done to everyone involved. ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‘ญ๐ŸšจInternational Womenโ€™s Day ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘ญ

Today we celebrate International Womenโ€™s Day and recognise the incredible women who serve across the Search and Rescue community.๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ›Ÿโ›‘๏ธ

Within HM Coastguard and throughout the wider SAR family, lifeboat crews, mountain rescue teams, lowland rescue, air assets, emergency services and volunteers, Women continue to play a vital role in saving lives and keeping people safe. ๐Ÿš๐Ÿ›Ÿโš“๏ธ

From coordination centres to cliff rescues, from helicopter winches to shoreline searches, women bring skill, leadership, resilience and compassion to every call for help. Their dedication strengthens our teams and inspires the next generation to step forward and serve. ๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Search and Rescue is built on teamwork, professionalism and commitment and today we proudly recognise the women who embody those values every day.

At Staithes CRT we have 2 women Coastguard Rescue Officers. Staithes B Alex and Staithes 13 Kirstie.

๐Ÿ‘ญ Meet Alex and Kirstie ๐Ÿ‘ญ

Alex is our Deputy Station Officer and has been with the team for nearly 8 years. Also one of our Officers In Charge, Alex often takes command of incidents using her skills to organise fellow rescue officers and other emergency service personnel to ensure an incident has the best possible outcome. She is also a CERCC instructor for HM Coastguard. ๐Ÿฉนโ›‘๏ธ

Kirstie is a Coastguard Rescue Officer and has been with the team for nearly 5 years. Kirstie is also one of our Search team leaders, using her skills to guide search teams and ensure the correct search techniques are being used.๐Ÿ•ต๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ”

We would like to thank them for their dedication to Staithes CRT on this International Womenโ€™s Day. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Today, team members fromStaithes Coastguard Whitby Coastguard and Redcar Coastguard Rescue Team attended a session on the serviceโ€™s โ€œDistressing Incident Support Toolkit (DIST).โ€

The session focused not only on supporting individuals in distress, but also on recognising and maintaining the health and wellbeing of ourselves and our colleagues when dealing with traumatic incidents. With over 50% of last yearโ€™s incidents being mental health related, this training provided valuable tools to help us better support those in need, as well as each other.

As a team, we regularly talk through difficult incidents and look out for one another. Todayโ€™s session has further strengthened our ability to respond with care, awareness, and resilience.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available:
โ€ข Samaritans โ€“ Call 116 123 (free, 24/7)
โ€ข NHS โ€“ Call 111 or visit nhs.uk for urgent mental health help
โ€ข Shout โ€“ Text โ€œSHOUTโ€ to 85258 for confidential support via text

A huge thank you to the Coastguard Rescue Officer for delivering such an engaging and informative session!

Staithes Coastguard โ€“ First update of 2026!

๐Ÿ“Ÿ 01/01/2026 ๐Ÿ“Ÿ
Just over 12 hours into the new year and the team were already on the move, paged alongside Whitby Coastguard to an incident in Whitby. A person had been cut off by the tide and was stranded on the rocks.

Thanks to great multi-agency teamwork โ€” and some serious grit and determination from the rope rescue technician โ€” the casualty was safely recovered to the cliff top. A strong start to the year from all involved ๐Ÿ‘

01/01/26:๐ŸŽŠA very special celebration! ๐ŸŽŠ

While most of the team were getting some well-earned rest, one of our team members Shaun, was by the side of his wife Leanne (Deputy Station Officer at Redcar) for a much more personal call-outโ€ฆ

At 23:55 on 01/01/26, the first of two beautiful twins, baby Florence, was born ๐Ÿ’•
At 01:11 on 02/01/26, Florence was joined by her little brother Jensen ๐Ÿ’™

Weโ€™re delighted to welcome the twins into our Coastguard family โ€” the registration forms are already printed! ๐Ÿ˜
Huge congratulations to you all ๐Ÿฅฐ

The rest of the month saw the team attend a further 8 incidents, including:

๐Ÿ”น Vehicles in the water
๐Ÿ”น Remote radio site monitoring
๐Ÿ”น Lost and missing persons
๐Ÿ”น Persons cut off by the tide

Thatโ€™s 9 incidents in total for January โ€” one more than the same time last year.

๐Ÿšจ Remember: In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.๐Ÿšจ

๐ŸฉตCommunity Message ๐Ÿ’™

Earlier this week, Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to reports of a person in difficulty along the coastline.

This was a complex and sensitive incident, requiring a coordinated multi-agency response. We worked closely alongside our colleagues from both Ravenscar and Staithes Coastguard teams, Whitby RNLI lifeboat, North Yorkshire Police, Rescue 912, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Incidents like this remind us that not all call outs are straightforward rescues. They require great care, and are approached with professionalism, compassion, and respect by everyone involved.

We would kindly ask our community to be mindful and respectful when emergency services are operating. This includes comments on social media and the sharing of photos or footage when vehicles, teams, or helicopters are present. Behind every response are real people, families, and responders doing their very best in difficult circumstances.

Our sincere thanks go to all agencies involved today for their teamwork, professionalism, and support for one another. We are also grateful to the local community for their understanding and respect.

Our thoughts remain with all those affected in every job we attend.

Remember, If you ever see someone in difficulty along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. You will never waste anyoneโ€™s time, you could save a life.

Your Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team ๐Ÿ’™
