We've been painting tree guards around the common and showing weeds no mercy in preparation for The Bucks Best Kept Village competition. Councillors are also slightly sad that there are no more signs to clean πŸ₯². We believe we've cleaned almost all. πŸ’ͺ

The Parish Council has been out parish polishing over the weekend in preparation for the Stokenchurch Village Fete on the 6th of June and The Bucks Best Kept Village competition. We have repainted all of the Village Entry gates and all have now been given a new lease of life. Thank you for the supportive honks from passing cars! 🫢

Eagle eyed observers may have noticed the new bus flags and timetables throughout the parish.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the the appearance and accessibility of the parish. Working with local councillors Shade Adoh, Robert Carington and the Buckinghamshire Public Transport Team we have identified and replaced almost all of the outdated, faded bus flags and damaged or missing bus timetables throughout the parish. The Signage replacement team have just four stops left.

Small improvements like these help keep the parish tidy, welcoming and easier to navigate for residents and visitors.

Working together to keep Stokenchurch looking its best.

Parish Councillors have been out parish polishing over the past few weeks. Cleaning signs, bus shelters, pedestrian crossings, islands and even a post box. As ever, do come and say hello if you spot us. It's been lovely meeting parishioners and hearing their kind words and letting us know of further locations that could do with a good old 'parish polish'.

We held yesterday evening a very memorable Annual Parish Meeting, celebrating community spirit, local history, and the people who quietly make our village special.

We opened the evening with an excellent presentation from Sue and Ali of 21st Century Thame on hedgehog conservation and the simple ways we can help encourage these much-loved visitors into our gardens and green spaces.

Our most senior veteran, Dan Davis, then unveiled our recently restored memorial plaques commemorating those from the village who fell in the First and Second World Wars. We had received quotations for the restoration from a number of companies, however https://hertfordshireheadstones.co.uk/contact-us/ very generously offered to complete the work entirely free of charge for the benefit of the parish, for which we are immensely grateful. The lettering has been beautifully restored and preserved for future generations. The plaques had been donated to Longburrow Hall after the closure of the Beacons Bottom Methodist Church.

Resident historians Sally and Patricia also shared their remarkable research into the men named on the plaques. Their information along with five photos they have found remembering our boys will be made available online over the coming days.

We were then delighted to welcome many of the charities and community groups from across Stokenchurch, who each provided updates on their invaluable work within the village.

A particularly special moment came when, for the first time ever, the honorary title of Freewoman of the Parish was bestowed upon a very surprised Kay Rimer. For more than 30 years, Kay has faithfully opened and closed St Peter's and St Paul's Church every single day. In addition to her numerous other volunteering throughout the village, Kay quietly made a substantial personal contribution towards the restoration of the village Lychgate, dedicated to the choir members who lost their lives during the Second World War.

With only a small proportion of churches across the UK remaining open during weekdays, this dedication is a remarkable achievement for both our village and our church community. We felt it was only right that such extraordinary and selfless service be recognised with the highest honour the parish can bestow.

The Freedom of the Parish certificate itself was beautifully framed by Rons Framing High Wycombe who very kindly provided the parish with a 50% discount on their framing service, for which we are also extremely grateful.

The evening concluded with a discussion on the pilot questions for the upcoming village survey, with parishioners kindly offering thoughtful suggestions and ideas for expanding the questionnaire. The draft survey will also be uploaded online in the coming days for parishioners to add further comment.

Our sincere thanks go to everyone who attended and contributed to such a positive evening, especially Dan, Kay, Sally, Patricia, along with the men from our parish whose sacrifice is commemorated on our plaques, and all those who continue to give their time so generously for the benefit of our village. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Stokenchurch Parish Council is aware of recent concerns raised regarding the cooker at Longburrow Hall.

The Parish Council had previously resolved to replace the commercial cooker as part of the ongoing maintenance and management of Longburrow Hall as a shared community facility. The replacement cooker has now been ordered for the benefit of all hall users, although delivery has unfortunately been delayed due to temporary supplier stock shortages.

The Parish Council would also like to thank Stokenchurch Dental for their very kind offer of support regarding the replacement cooker. As the council had already resolved to proceed with the purchase as a community asset for all hirers, the cooker is being funded directly by the Parish Council. The council will also be responding directly to Stokenchurch Dental to thank them properly for their generous offer and community support.

We would encourage hall users and residents to raise operational concerns through the official hall and council contact channels wherever possible, so that issues can be addressed directly and efficiently.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Longburrow Hall and its community groups.

After contacting the parish council, the Herd family very kindly donated their Horse Chestnut tree to the parish.

This tree has a fascinating story behind it. It was grown by the Herd family from a conker found outside the Methodist Church in 2000. After nurturing it for 26 years, they worked with Cllr Seddon to find the perfect location for it to be planted.

The chosen spot was where, sadly, a spruce tree had previously died. The existing tree was removed and the tree guards were restored and repainted by the parish council to provide a fitting home for this special tree. A wonderful lasting gift to the village for future generations to enjoy. And for posterity a plaque will be following in due course.

If you have a tree that you would like to donate to the parish, please contact Cllr Andrew Seddon at [email protected].

The Union Flag is once again flying proudly over Stokenchurch, looking better than ever.

After suffering significant damage during recent storms, the flag was lovingly repaired and restored by Stokenchurch Parish Council. It has now been fitted with a weight to help it withstand the elements.

It was a privilege to have Dan Davis, one of Stokenchurch’s most senior veterans and a long time resident, raise the flag. His service and enduring connection to the village made the occasion very special indeed.

The flagpole itself has also been given a wonderful refresh thanks to Seamus Doyle (Chairman of Stokenchurch Memorial Hall) , who very kindly applied two fresh coats of paint using a very long ladder! Thanks to the efforts and generosity of everyone involved, our Union Flag is once again flying high over our community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
