Funding is available for groups to hold local events. WDC is inviting local community groups to have some fun and celebrate. Each group can come up with their own ideas for a local event which will bring local people together.Wycombe-One Community is a local partnership which is run by Wycombe District Council. The partnership has advice and funding available (from £500 to £4,000) per event to help local groups within the district organise and host community events. They are eager to hear from community groups from all over the district who are looking to organise an event which will bring different people together in one celebration. The type of the event could be almost anything - as long as it mixes people from a local area who have different backgrounds - young and old, people from different parts of the District or different social groups; the idea is that people come together in one common celebration. There are all sorts of celebrations such as a street party, a neighbourhood celebration - or a St. George's Day celebration for 23 April.St. George's Day celebrations have resonance with all parts of the community; St George (who was born in Turkey in the third century AD) served as a Roman soldier who stood up against the prosecution of Christians. Born three hundred years after Christ and three hundred years before Mohammed, most people know of him as the patron saint of England. In fact he is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece. In addition, towns across many different countries have him as their saint - Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (where is he second to St Mark).Because St George had such a varied background and is honoured in many different cultures and many different places, Wycombe-One thinks he shows the spirit of what they are working towards - bringing people from different backgrounds together to celebrate together. If you or your organisation would like to find out more, talk to the community team at Wycombe District Council on 01494 421231 or go to Wycombe District Council's website: www.wycombe.gov.uk
