Our Northumberland Conservative team has been out in Ashington, talking to residents in Hirst ahead of the County Council by-election on Thursday 1 October.

The election has been triggered after former Reform councillor John Allen lost his seat for failing to attend a single council meeting for six consecutive months. He is now standing again as an Independent.

Residents deserve a councillor who will turn up, work hard and actually represent Hirst.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped to speak to the team today.

🗳️ Vote Conservative on 1 October.

🏊 £1.1 MILLION BOOST FOR HALTWHISTLE

More major investment is coming to West Northumberland, with £1.1 million proposed for Haltwhistle Swimming and Leisure Centre.

The funding would modernise the pool machinery, safeguard the future of this much-loved community facility and support the jobs it provides.

And this is just the first phase of major investment planned for the leisure centre through the Borderlands programme.

Conservative-led Northumberland County Council is continuing to invest in our towns and communities right across the county 💙

🌳 A FIGHT FOR THE FUTURE OF SHOOTING

The countryside is being urged to mobilise after the Labour Government announced a major review into gamebird shooting.

BASC has warned that the shooting community should be under “no illusion” about the significance of this review and has described it as a fight for the future of shooting.

In Northumberland, shooting supports jobs, gamekeepers, rural businesses, conservation and entire communities.

Game provides high-quality British food, eaten by families across the country and supplied to restaurants in Britain and across Europe.

Decisions affecting our countryside cannot be made by people who don't understand rural life.

If you shoot, beat, pick up, work as a gamekeeper, farm or run a rural business, please respond to the Government's call for evidence.

🗓️ Closes 1 November

🏃 NORTHUMBERLAND CONSERVATIVES BACK KIELDER MARATHON

Conservative-led Northumberland County Council has renewed its support for the Kielder Marathon in 2026, continuing a partnership that has been in place since the event began.

This year the Council will also fund six places for children in care to take part in the junior races, with Altra generously providing around £1,500 of running shoes and clothing.

We're proud to support an event that brings people to Northumberland, promotes healthy and active lifestyles and gives our young people the chance to be part of something special.

Another great event we're proud to support here in Northumberland 🏃

🌊 NURDLES IN NORTHUMBERLAND – DOES LABOUR GOVT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY?

Tynemouth councillor Tom Bailey has quit the Labour Party, having been heavily involved in the community response to the nurdle disaster.

The spill has seen millions of plastic pellets wash up on beaches across the North East, with volunteers carrying out much of the clean up. The Government's response has been too slow and the Environment Agency has been nowhere to be seen.

The nurdles have now reached Amble.

Our Conservative candidate Jenny Richards said:

“The Government and Environment Agency response has simply not been good enough. It has taken far too long to get to grips with this while nurdles have continued to spread along our coastline. Our coastal communities deserve better.” 🌊

🚜 DEFRA matters, Prime Minister.

An extraordinary comment at PMQs from “call me Andy”, in a rare appearance wearing a tie, appeared to dismiss the importance of the DEFRA Secretary around the Cabinet table.

DEFRA stands for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Government department responsible for farming, food production, our environment, animal health and welfare, fisheries and rural affairs.

These aren't minor issues in Northumberland. They are absolutely fundamental to our county and our rural economy.

Our farmers and fishermen work hard every day to put food on our tables. They deserve a Government, and a Prime Minister, that treats rural affairs with the importance they deserve.

🗳️ HAS JOE MORRIS NOT GOT ANYTHING BETTER TO TALK ABOUT?

In his column in the Hexham Courant this week, Labour MP Joe Morris doesn’t talk about the cost of living, jobs, our NHS, rural services, the A1, or supporting our farmers and businesses.

Instead, he’s talking about changing the electoral system to help what he calls the “progressive majority”.

🇬🇧 The British people have already had their say. In the 2011 referendum, 68% voted against replacing First Past the Post with the Alternative Vote. Here in the Northumberland, the No vote was 73%.

🌹 And Joe might want to be careful what he wishes for. A more proportional system could encourage Labour’s own increasingly divided factions to go their separate ways too.

But the bigger question is: has he really got nothing more important to talk about?

Perhaps Labour should spend less time worrying about how people vote and more time giving them something worth voting for.

🧠 NORTHUMBERLAND SNUBBED BY LABOUR AGAIN

The Government has announced a £343 million expansion of community mental health support centres across England.

But not a single one is planned for Northumberland.

The North East locations announced include Newcastle, Gateshead, County Durham, Darlington and Sunderland, while people across Northumberland face significant journeys to access specialist services.

People in Berwick, Alnwick, Hexham, Ashington, Blyth and our rural communities deserve accessible mental health support too.

We'll be asking why Northumberland has been snubbed, and what the Government intends to do about it.

Conservative Northumberland County Council Leader Glen Sanderson has joined a cross-party call for progress on dualling the A1.

The A1 is too important to Northumberland for party politics. Northumberland Conservatives will work with anyone who can help deliver a safer, more reliable road and ultimately the full dualling our county needs.

While we genuinely welcome their support now, we won't stop holding the Government to account or putting pressure on Ministers to reverse their decision to cancel the A1 scheme.

This is about getting the right result for Northumberland.

Keep up the pressure. Reverse the decision. Dual the A1 🛣️
