On Thursday, we had an exciting day at PortAventura World in Salou, Spain.

The pupils enjoyed exploring the theme park and going on lots of thrilling rides. Thanks to our fast passes, everyone had the opportunity to experience ten amazing attractions with shorter waiting times. From high-speed roller coasters to exciting adventures, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The day was filled with laughter, fun, and plenty of memorable experiences with friends.

After returning to the hotel, we celebrated our final evening together with a delicious barbecue. Everyone enjoyed the barbecue, shared stories from the trip, and reflected on the wonderful memories made throughout our time in Spain.

It was a fantastic final day and a fitting end to a memorable trip.

We are pleased to say we have a brand new drum kit here at HMS, paid for in part by a grant from Universal Music UK Sound Foundation.

Many students will benefit from the new kit in drum lessons, rehearsals and performances.

We were in desperate need of a new one and the students are already loving the better sound of this new kit!

We recently partnered with Corbridge Chamber Music Festival in order to design a poster for one of their upcoming concerts and two winners from HMS have been chosen!

The Family Concert on Sat 25th July features excerpts from Camille Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals” suite and HMS students designed imaginative, eye-catching posters to represent this. We had some fantastic finalists selected by the Music Department staff and then the organisers of the Music Festival chose the winners as: Sinjin R and Emelia T, whose images will feature on the final poster and they have also won free tickets to attend the concert at St Andrews' Church in Corbridge!

Finalists were: Georgia O; Ava G; Natalia S; Emilia F; Marcus M; Alex T; Gryffyd T; Emily G; Heidi B; Emelia T; Sinjin R.

Corbridge Chamber Music Festival is an established Chamber Music Festival and has been running for over 25 years.

Day 3 began perfectly with a visit to the beach, where pupils enjoyed a refreshing swim in the sea under the Spanish sunshine. It was a fantastic start to the day, with plenty of smiles and laughter all around.

We then travelled to Poble Espanyol, where pupils took part in an exciting paella workshop. Stepping into the role of chefs for the morning, they worked together to create their own traditional Spanish dishes. Afterwards, we all enjoyed tasting the delicious results – a big 'bien hecho' to our talented young chefs!

The cultural experience continued as pupils learned about famous Spanish festivals, including La Tomatina and the San FermĂn bull run, discovering the traditions and excitement behind these world-famous events.

There was also time for pupils to explore Poble Espanyol independently, taking in its unique architecture, shops, and atmosphere.

Next, we made our way to El Mirador, where we were treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Barcelona – a perfect moment to take in the beauty of the city.

Afterwards, we visited the iconic Sagrada Família for a guided tour. Pupils were truly in awe of Gaudí’s masterpiece, captivated by its remarkable design, intricate detail, and stunning interior.

To round off the day, we enjoyed a relaxing stroll along the promenade, where pupils had the opportunity to pick up souvenirs and soak up the lively evening atmosphere.

Another memorable day filled with culture, fun, and unforgettable experiences!

Scholastic Book Fair 2026

Thank you to all pupils, parents, carers and staff who supported the Scholastic Book Fair just before half-term. The Fair created a real buzz about reading with lots of exciting new titles plus books from well-known authors on offer.

Huge thanks also to the wonderful Library Champions who helped to run the Fair and the Library during some very busy lunchtimes.

Your fantastic support has helped to fund a wide range of new books for HMS Library: please see some of them pictured on the library desk. Many of our keen sports players will be delighted that we have also been able to refresh and add to our football selection ahead of the 2026 World Cup!

Day 2 🇪🇸

Our second day in Barcelona was packed with unforgettable experiences and opportunities to explore the rich culture and history of Catalonia.

The morning began with a spectacular trip to Montserrat, travelling up the mountain by cable car and taking in the breathtaking views. Pupils visited the beautiful basilica, with some fortunate enough to witness the start of a service, adding a special and memorable element to their visit. A picnic lunch at the top of Montserrat provided the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

Back in the city, we explored the vibrant atmosphere of La Boqueria Market, wandered around Port Vell, and visited the Maremagnum Shopping Centre. We then headed to the iconic FC Barcelona area, where pupils explored the museum and shopping complex, learning more about one of the world's most famous football clubs and its place in Barcelona's culture and history.

The day concluded back at the hotel, where pupils sampled a variety of traditional tapas including tortilla española and patatas bravas before being captivated by an authentic flamenco performance. The energy, passion, and skill of the dancers left everyone in awe and provided a fantastic end to an incredible day.

A wonderful day was enjoyed by all, with pupils continuing to demonstrate our school values of throughout.

Spain Update 1

Our Spain adventure got off to an early start on Monday morning as we travelled to Leeds Bradford Airport ready for our flight to Barcelona. Everyone was excited to begin the trip and enjoyed the journey to Spain.

On Monday afternoon, we explored the historic city of Tarragona, discovering its fascinating Roman heritage. Pupils were impressed by the remarkable Roman ruins and the ancient amphitheatre, learning about the city's rich history and its importance during Roman times. We also visited the magnificent Tarragona Cathedral, taking in its stunning architecture and learning more about the city's cultural and religious heritage. To round off the afternoon, students enjoyed some time souvenir shopping, picking up gifts and mementos to remember their first day in Spain.

We finished the day by enjoying some well-earned fun on the beach, giving everyone the chance to relax, play and take in the beautiful Mediterranean coastline after a busy day of sightseeing. It has been a fantastic start to the trip, with plenty of learning, exploration and memorable experiences.
