This Volunteers’ Week we’ve been celebrating the amazing work our Community Fire Safety Volunteers do and what they get from it.
Rosie is one of our volunteers and here’s what she had to say.
“Over the past year, I have really enjoyed volunteering with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I am grateful for everything I have learned through the training, events, and opportunities I have been involved in. One of the things I have valued most is the chance to meet so many amazing people. Everyone has been so welcoming, supportive, and willing to share their knowledge and experiences. Seeing the dedication and passion of those within the organisation has been genuinely inspiring and has given me a real appreciation for the difference they make in our communities. Being part of such a positive and encouraging team has helped me grow in confidence, develop new skills, and given me even greater motivation to achieve my goal of joining Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.”

❤️ Better prepared emergency services + resilient partnerships = a safer Hertfordshire.

That's why we take part in planned training exercises, like the one on Monday at The Snow Centre in Hemel.

We’re delighted to welcome our newest recruits into the service, who have now passed out having completed their 16 week training. The new firefighters will serve communities across the county and now join fire stations where they will continue to develop their skills as part of the operational crew.

Our popular Open Days start this weekend, with the first one taking place at Cheshunt Fire Station on Saturday, 12pm to 3pm.
More are planned across Hertfordshire over the summer months, so there’s sure to be one nearby to visit and enjoy a range of free activities including the chance to look around a fire engine and watch safety demonstrations. Some also have a quiet hour for those sensitive to noise.

Then why not become a Community Fire Safety Volunteer and be involved in a range of different activities, including assisting with our home fire safety scheme, youth engagement work, helping at local events and much more.

It’s Volunteers’ Week and one of our own, Palvira, had this to say about what it means to her.
“I enjoy volunteering for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service because it gives me the opportunity to support my local community and make a positive difference. I’ve also enjoyed being part of a supportive team and meeting lots of new people, whether that’s members of the community or fellow volunteers. I’ve learnt a lot through volunteering and the experiences I’ve had, which has helped me grow in confidence as well as develop new skills. I’m truly grateful to be part of such a rewarding and worthwhile organisation.”

With summer fully on the way, it’s important to be aware of the hidden dangers of swimming in open water. Rivers and lakes can contain debris, unpredictable currents, and sudden changes in depth—and even on the hottest days, the water can stay surprisingly cold.
For a safer experience, why not choose one of the county’s organised venues? From splash parks and swimming pools to watersports centres, there are plenty of great options to enjoy the water safely.
