GCSE Geology Field Trip to Cornwall 2026

Year 10 Geology Students

The Year 10 Geology students spent three days exploring some of Cornwall's most significant geological sites, investigating the processes that have shaped the county's remarkable landscapes.

Day 1 – Penzance

The trip began in Penzance, where students arrived and were introduced to the geology of Cornwall. This provided an opportunity to become familiar with the region's geological history and prepare for the fieldwork ahead.

Day 2 – Bude

Students visited Bude to study the spectacular folded rock formations found along the coastline. They examined how compressional forces during mountain-building events caused the sedimentary rocks to fold, learning to identify features such as anticlines and synclines while considering the tectonic processes responsible for their formation.

Day 3 – Geevor Mine and the Lizard

In the morning, students visited Geevor Mine, where they explored Cornwall's rich mining heritage and discovered how geological processes concentrated valuable tin and copper ores into mineral veins.

During the afternoon, the group travelled to the Lizard to undertake geological mapping. Students identified different rock types, observed geological boundaries, and practised field mapping techniques while studying one of the UK's most geologically distinctive areas.

It was a jam packed and very rewarding few days.

Year 7 students investigated the science behind helium balloons, exploring how forces, weather conditions, and wind patterns affect where a balloon travels and eventually lands.

Using prediction, data analysis, and scientific reasoning, they applied their classroom learning to a fun and engaging real-world investigation, strengthening their understanding of scientific enquiry and problem-solving.

Lots of fun was had by all!

Earlier this week, our Year 10 History students enjoyed an informative visit to the Tower of London.

The trip brought classroom learning to life as students explored one of Britain's most significant historic landmarks, discovering its fascinating role as a royal palace, fortress, prison and treasury. Highlights included learning about the Tower's famous residents and uncovering stories from nearly 1,000 years of history.

A fantastic day of learning outside the classroom – well done to all students for their excellent engagement and conduct throughout the visit.

🌍 Year 12 Geography Fieldwork Trip 🌍

Over the past three days, our Year 12 geographers have been putting their classroom learning into practice across Bath, Cheddar Gorge, Weston-Super-Mare, and local woodland environments as part of their A-Level fieldwork.

Students investigated topics including studentification in Bath, the impacts of tourism at Cheddar Gorge, coastal management and sand dune succession at Weston-super-Mare, and carbon storage in woodland ecosystems.

The trip is providing invaluable experience and data collection opportunities for their upcoming Non Examined Assessments, and our students are representing the school brilliantly with their curiosity, resilience, and enthusiasm.

Well done, Year 12! πŸ‘
