I set up a petition to ask Hertfordshire County Council to re-open the Sustrans national cycle 61 in Parliament Square, Hertford by stopping vehicles parking on it and blocking it. Currently the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) for the square does not permit East Herts Council parking attendants to ticket the vehicles and only East Herts Police could ticket if they see the vehicles driving over the pavement.

The petition reached 100 signatures on Monday the 14th Sept and has triggered the offer of a private meeting with the relevant Executive member from Hertfordshire County Council . However to show just how important residents of East Herts and Hertfordshire see safeguarding our existing cycle routes please sign the petition and share to make this clear to the County Council.

The petition URL is in the comments but the QR code will take you to the website. The website it a bit clunky but Hertfordshire County Council rules say all petitions have to be on their website otherwise they automatically reject it.

Asking Hertfordshire County Council to Open Sustrans national cycle route by stopping vehicles blocking it by parking - please sign and share

I started a petition yesterday to ask that Hertfordshire County Council pursue their Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to stop people parking on the only national cycle route that goes through East Herts; Sustrans 61, where it travels through Hertford (Parliament Square). Please sign and share the petition if you believe that we should safeguard our existing cycle rroutes not only campaign for additional routes via the (aka the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan)

Massive thank you to officers at East Herts Council, the street cleaning crews from Veolia and the effort by residents on Tamworth Road to move their cars.

Veolia crews loosened all the dirt and plants next to the kerb with hoes before the wagons then swept. Most of the loose debris from the failed attempt to resurface the road last year by Hertfordshire County Council has been removed making the road better fit the 'preferred cycle route' designation.

Unfortunately not all cars were moved, I know there were residents on holiday and at least one has volunteered to clear where his car is which is a great bit of community service. But there is still a few areas where a bit of extra oomph may be needed especially where the parking is from commuters using the station or from residents in the surrounding area.

I will now check when the drains on Tamworth Road are due to be cleaned so any of the debris already in the drains will be cleared. Thank you all this has been very successful and thank you to the resident who requested this at the last Hertford Town Council councillor surgery. Next one is on Sat, 1030-1230 in Farmers Market on Market Place.

On Sunday I was on my way to the Kingsmead Residents' Association - Hertford litter picking and had to try and walk on Ware Road between Stanstead Road and Burleigh Road. This pavement is the main route to the only school in Kingsmead, Wheatcroft. How on earth is any parent with a buggy or someone on a mobility scooter supposed to walk on this pavement with the pavement parking?

Hertfordshire County Council have been looking at how to resolve this as part of their active travel agenda championed by the current Liberal Democrats administration and before at the request of local county councillor Ben Crystall of East Herts Green Party. Cllr Kirsty Taylor-Moran, as Leader of Herts Green Party is there anything you can do to get yellow lining or an improved parking layout resolved now please?

East Herts Police I know you have a lot of priorities that are far more important than helping parents get their children to school without walking on the road (murder, county lines etc) but is there anything you can do to ticket or discourage parking on this small piece of road please? Just from the corner of Stansted Road to the pedestrian entrance to school?

Last week I met up with East Herts Council officers Rowan and Joel plus Caroline from Countryside Hertfordshire County Council to discuss the development of the new 10 year plan for . This will be developed over the next couple of months, consulted upon with local residents with an aim to implement the plan from the 1st April next year.

There are some works already on 'the to do' list for this year including a repair/replacement of surfacing around the multi play equipment as it is lifting and some woodland management activities. No promises but we did talk about turning round the bench that is facing the hill rather than the view towards the business park but it is apparent this is a difficult ask because the bench shouldn't have it's back to the path for safety reasons.

I have already spoken with Kingsmead Residents' Association - Hertford who has a few volunteers to set up a 'Friends of Foxholes Woodland' (FoFW) to help with the project. Activities for FoFW can be anything from publicising the consultation to doing bird or butterfly surveys to organising some volunteer planting and anything in between.

We had a general discussion on potential areas to be addressed in the long term management plan including expanding play equipment on the Foxholes Ave playground, management of invasive species, creation of new habitat for wildlife, increasing biodiversity and management of invasive species like the snowberry. Better information plus waymarking and the advertising of the woodland as part of a trail around Hertford were also on the to do list.

Obviously once the plan is available there is a need to identify funding for some of the improvement works so if you know any local businesses that might be interested in funding any aspect of the plans or additional benches etc.

Cllr Sarah Hopewell is the East Herts portfolio holder. Other local councillors are Cllr Steven Watson, Maura Connolly and Carl Britain.
