Have you noticed our arctic foxes looking a little different recently? 🦊

Their bright white winter coats are darkening as they start to transition into their summer colours, helping them remain camouflaged as the seasons change.

Head to Wildwood to catch a glimpse of their transformation yourself!

Take a moment to pause, stretch, and breathe in fresh air this week🌲

We could all learn a thing or two from our lynx about slowing down and enjoying the moment.

The best discoveries are made together 🐗

Our wild boar hoglets are exploring the world one snout-full of soil at a time! Staying close to their siblings helps them learn important skills, including how to search for food.

Hoglets are born with distinctive orange stripes, which provide natural camouflage in the undergrowth. As they grow, these stripes gradually fade.

Over 400 species recorded 🐞🐛🦋

The Wildwood BioBlitz was a roaring success!

We ran guided surveys investigating taxa and habitats, got the microscopes out for the tardigrades, picked up FIVE species of bats on our evening bat walk using our bat detectors and so much more 🦇

Thank you to Kent Bat Group, Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group, Kent Moth Group, Stodmarsh NNR, .kent and Bumblebee Conservation for holding stalls and/or helping to run guided activities.

Who knows…together we may have inspired the next generation of bug experts, wildlife ecologists and conservationists 🤗

Every great conservation journey starts with curiosity 🧐

'With the recent announcement of Castletown's 5 year long project, we are happy to share our involvement in filming the pinnacle of the project, where years of dedication has paid off.

Britain is one of the most nature depleted countries on the planet. With conservationists and farmers fighting for the correct way to use the the land, one estate in the north of Cumbria have initiated a project to manage habitats for profit and biodiversity.

The reintroductions of bison began in Kent, and the project began as a partnership between Wildwood Trust and Kent Wildlife Trust. Since then, this project has involved Castletown estate, and our film in particular features Wallington National trust too.

With the return of ecosystem engineers that once pioneered ecosystems, Castletown hope for an extraordinary transformation.

We hope this project is enlightening and provides the facts to the news. An initiative such as this is always going to kickstart controversy between involved parties, but we hope to inspire and share appreciation for the hard work of those involved.

This was our graduate project, but as with previous works, wildlife filmmaking means so much more to us than an assignment. It truly is the joy, passion, dedication and interest that drives us.

Thank you for all of those involved including:

The Solway Wild Lands project has officially launched! 🦬

Set across 4000 acres, Castletown Estate received five bison from the Blean, with plans to establish a new breeding herd in the north.

The project builds on the award winning Blean Bison Project, where bison have already shown how they can restore woodland and boost biodiversity.

Wildwood’s Director General Paul Whitfield:

“From the outset, the ambition at Blean was to show what’s possible - that by putting nature back in charge, we can begin to restore the essential ecological processes that our landscapes have been missing for centuries.

“To now see bison from that founding herd established and thriving in Cumbria is incredibly encouraging. It shows that this approach works and can be adapted and applied in very different landscapes.

“Our role is to support that journey by sharing the knowledge and experience we’ve built up working with the UK’s first free-roaming bison herd.”

Yesterday, joined by Bison Rangers from our partners , we attended talks from Derek Gow, Castletown’s Project Lead Toby Mounsey-Heysham and spoke with an array of passionate farmers, land owners and industry professionals.

The Solway Wild Lands project is about creating a living landscape, allowing natural processes to do the work and using them to build a system that becomes more resilient over time.

The bison are already having an incredible impact on the land in Cumbria, and they’re not the only ecosystem engineers on site either! The project also has beavers! 🦫

We’ll be continuing to work closely with the Castletown team and will keep our community up to date on all the relevant milestones in the coming years 🙌

What an incredible day for British conservation. Bison are back in the north!

💚Volunteer Appreciation Post 💚

This week, we're saying a huge THANK YOU to all our volunteers. Their passion, dedication and enthusiasm make a real difference every day.

We'd love to share a few words from the amazing people who give their time to support Wildwood Trust.

🐦‍⬛ Steve, volunteer on the Chough Reintroduction Programme:
"This is my second year volunteering on the Wildwood Trust-led Chough reintroduction programme. It has been amazing, it incorporates my love of birdwatching with a real sense of achievement in that I am helping to get a species of bird that was nearly extinct in the UK back into the skies above Dover and beyond."

🌿 Katie:
"I have been volunteering at Wildwood for a year and find it very rewarding. The tasks are varied and it is lovely to give something back in a fun and beautiful environment."

🌟 Sam:
"Every day is a school day volunteering at Wildwood! It is a real joy being with such knowledgeable and friendly people and, of course, the animals are the cherry on top of the volunteering cake!"

💚 Tara:
"Everyone has been so welcoming. Wildwood is a great place to volunteer and you really feel part of a fantastic organisation."

💛 Georgia:
"I've been volunteering at Wildwood for two years now and it's become such a big part of my life. I wanted to learn how to help local wildlife and didn't realise how much I'd learn about the animals here. I love helping visitors discover them too."

To every volunteer past and present: thank you. Wildwood simply wouldn't be the same without you. 💚

Inspired by our volunteers' stories? There are a variety of volunteer roles available, many requiring just a two-hour commitment, making it easy to get involved and make a difference.
