This may look like an ordinary bedroom window, but look a little closer and you’ll discover an inscription….

On the 27th April 1814, Hetty Walwyn was imprisoned in this very bedroom at Hellens Manor.

Hetty had fallen in love with a man who worked on the estate. The two ran away together, but Hetty eventually decided to return home. The welcome she received was not the one she had hoped for, and it is believed that her father locked her in this room for the rest of her life.

Trapped inside, her only means of communicating with the outside world was a rope attached to a bell at the top of the house. A bell and rope which, remarkably still hang there today.

With her diamond ring, Hetty is said to have inscribed the words “It is part of a virtue to abstain from what we love if it should prove our bane.” Those words can still be seen today hidden among the pains of glass.

And then there is Hetty herself… her ghost is said to be the most prominent of several spirits that are believed to wander the hallways of Hellens.

Did her lover really climb the outer wall of Hellens to see Hetty one last time?

Come and join us on a house tour to discover more about Hetty Walwyn and the incredible history, stories and mysteries held within Hellens Manor.

A little behind-the-scenes magic in the Córdoba Room ✨

For the past few months, our amazing Arts Society Volunteers have been carefully conserving the beautiful silk brocade bed hangings.

Years of light, ageing and wear had taken their toll on the delicate silk, so the team carefully secured the fabric onto a new backing using ultrafine conservation thread, before interlining and rehanging the textiles.

Now they’re back where they belong, beautifully supported and ready to be enjoyed for years to come. 💛

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers for their skill, patience and care in helping preserve these wonderful historic textiles. ✨

You can view this room on one of our house tours which run every Sunday and Monday. Book via the link in our bio 🤍

While we eat most of what we grow in our vegetable gardens, there’s one crop we happily leave for someone else.🌿🐝

We’ve had lots of visitors this year ask why we don’t eat our beautiful artichokes. The answer is simple, we grow them for the bees.

Those enormous artichoke blooms provide rich nectar and heavy pollen loads, making them a vital food source for honeybees and native bumblebees when other flowers may be starting to fade.

So, while they might look like they belong on our dinner table, we’re more than happy to let the bees enjoy them instead. 🐝🌸

Sometimes the best harvest is the one we leave behind for nature. 🌿

When you visit Hellens, our gardens are free to roam. Why not take a look at our beautiful vegetable gardens and maybe you’ll get some inspiration for your own ✨
