Councillor Pete Hannell

Councillor Pete Hannell I was born and raised in Hemel and I proudly represent my home ward of Bennetts End, a place I've lived in for 31 years. I'm a retired NHS Paramedic.

This was my world growing up in the seventies in Deaconsfield Road. My maternal grandparents lived on Runham Road. I was encouraged to stay out all day in the holidays by my parents and I pretty much knew every inch of those streets.

I was told by some good judges that I would never bring ballet to Bennetts End - Wrong !

58 years ago today, 187 female sewing machinists walked out of the Ford Car Plant in Dagenham in a dispute over pay inequality.
In 1968 it was not uncommon for women to be paid less than men for 'like work' and it certainly was not illegal.
Their action led to the Equal Pay Act (1970). The Act was incorporated into the Equality Act (2010). Don't stop fighting to improve working conditions.

I love this picture of Barnacres Road going up towards Bennetts Gate. Taken in 1953 when, as phase two of the New Town, Bennetts End as a housing estate was very young.

Tomorrow, it will be 31 years and 345 days since I joined the NHS as an Emergency Ambulance Technician. It will also be my last day in the London Ambulance Service (LAS).
I was posted to Pinner as a "Relief" in 1994 and got a "line" at Kenton in January 1996. I became a Paramedic later that year and in total, I spent just over 28 years at that station.
I transfered to North Kensington two years ago.
For twenty two years, I served as a committee member on the UNISON branch of the LAS, defending and improving the Terms & Conditions of my fellow workers.
The NHS, Trade Unionism and tolerance are the three things that have made me feel so proud and fortunate to have been born British.
It is time for me to move on with what remains of my life but I shall miss all of my work colleagues and union comrades.
Thank you.

Forget Hemel Hempstead Town's agonising FA Cup defeat to Wigan Athletic on penalties in November. South Hill school went to Wembley and won the under 11 schools cup.

We are in the South, it is official. In the 2026/27 season, Hemel Hempstead Town will play in the National League South.
