Congratulations to our Chair Dr Christopher Cuff who yesterday was presented with the British Empire Medal awarded to him for services to the RNLI in the New Years Honours list.

Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall Sir Edward Bolitho presented the medal to Dr Cuff and he was accompanied by Rob Nolan, Chair of Cornwall Council and Petty Officer Cadet Joshua Benton from the Falmouth/Penryn Sea Cadets. The presentation took place within the station and on board RNLB Rose.

'Dr Cuff joined the RNLI in 1990 as medical advisor to The Lizard Lifeboat Station, while also serving the local community as a GP in Mullion from 1986 until 2010. For more than 35 years, Dr Cuff has played a vital role in ensuring the medical fitness and preparedness of lifeboat crews, offering expert guidance on casualty care, leading medical exercises and providing invaluable pastoral support.

From 2007 to 2024, Dr Cuff also served as RNLI regional medical advisor for the South West, supporting 33 lifeboat stations. In this role, he has helped shape RNLI medical policy and represented the region on the RNLI Medical Committee, serving as deputy chair.'

RNLI world class lifeguards patrol over 240 beaches around the coasts of the UK and the Channel Islands. They’re here to keep you and your loved ones safe, in and out of the water, by providing first aid and sharing vital safety advice.

This year marks 25 years of RNLI lifeguards making beaches safer.
Since 2001, RNLI lifeguards in the south west have saved 1098 lives and aided 167,592 people through rescues, interventions and delivering casualty care. They have responded to 185,954 incidents and carried out more than 22M preventative actions.

So, if you’re looking for a safe beach near you, check out their locations.

The RNLI have launched their Float to Live 2026 campaign.

The average sea temperature around the UK and Ireland is just 12°C. Inland waters like lakes, rivers, lochs and reservoirs can be colder - even in the summer. Remember, if you find yourself in difficulty in the water, Float to Live.

"Float to Live could save your life. Remember: - Tilt your head back with ears submerged - Relax and try to control your breathing - Use your hands to help you stay afloat - It's okay if your legs sink, we all float differently.

Practice these steps at a supervised location, like a swimming pool or life guarded beach so you know what to do in an emergency.
