Helston Town Council are very proud to be flying the Pride flag throughout June!
Helston is a town built on community; from Flora Day to the Harvest Fair and Christmas Lights, we’re a town that loves bringing people together and a place where people often feel safe and at home.
Whilst many people do find Helston a safe and welcoming place, we know that isn't the reality yet for many LGBTQIA+ people. Helston's Pride event was created after young Helstonians approached the Council to say they often felt unsafe in the town because of who they are which was really sad to hear. Those conversations led to what is now Helston Pride Picnic, now joyfully in its third year.
Devon & Cornwall Police recently confirmed that sexual orientation was the second most common characteristic targeted in reported hate crimes across the region, which we absolutely cannot stand for as a community. It’s not ok for Helstonians to be targets of crime, hatred or violence because of who they love, how they identify, or how they want to peacefully live their life.
Everyone who is kind and tolerant is welcome here, belongs here, and deserves to feel safe being themselves, which is why we’re flying the Pride flag throughout June.
Everyone is welcome in Helston, and we ask that everyone who visits or lives here extends that same kindness to others. This is a town where people look out for one another, and that includes our LGBTQIA+ neighbours, friends and family 🏳️🌈
