A very exciting delivery has just landed at the Hebden Royd Town Council office! These swift boxes will very soon be being installed across Hebden Royd, by Countryside and Woodlands Team in partnership with Calderdale Council and the RSPB, funded by the Community Foundation for Calderdale.

Swift numbers have fallen by 62% since 1995, largely due to the loss of nesting sites.

The swift boxes have now all been allocated, so anyone who applied for one should have heard back as to whether or not their premises was suitable to host a swift box.

We hope there'll be funding for more swift boxes in the future.

In the meantime, we're looking forward to seeing these boxes in use as safe nesting sites for these lovely birds.

We'd love to hear any success stories, so please send photos if you're having one installed and see them in use!

Hebden Royd Town Council is delighted to welcome Cllr Steve Woodhead as the new Mayor for 2026โ€“2027! ๐ŸŽ‰

The appointment was made during the Annual Meeting of the Town Council on 12th May 2026, at which the following Community Awards were also presented:

๐Ÿ… Sue and Geoff Mitchell for their unwavering determination in bringing The Local Motive arts and community hub to life.

๐Ÿ… Lucia, the Prime Minister and Jude, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Student Parliament at Calder Learning Trust for providing a voice for children and young people when the Pennine Alliance Learning Trust was faced with a very unpopular merger proposal.

๐Ÿ… Flossy (Florence Wardley) in recognition of her charity fundraising efforts, busking to raise ยฃ5,000 for Cancer Research UK, along with her sister Emme.

Cllr Steve Woodhead's charity of the year will be Calder Valley Search & Rescue Team, a fantastic volunteer-led group who devote their free time to helping keep the community safe in our beautiful but sometimes challenging landscape.

The outgoing Mayor, Cllr Keith Butterick, awarded a donation to his chosen charity for 2025/26, White Ribbon UK, as a result of fundraising efforts throughout the year.

Christine Bampton Smith steps down after over 40 yearsโ€™ service to Hebden Royd Town Council and Calderdale Council.

As of May 2026, Christine Bampton Smith has stepped down as Councillor for Hebden Royd Town Council, having been the longest-standing Councillor, dedicating over 40 yearsโ€™ service to the communities of Hebden Royd and Calderdale.

In that time, she served on many Committees and represented the community with a deeply-held commitment to safeguarding sustainable services and affordable housing for the people of Hebden Royd. In 2002/03 she was also the Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council.
In recognition of her many yearsโ€™ community work as both a parish and regional councillor, in 2014 Bampton Smith was awarded the British Empire Medal, an honour issued to individuals for sustained, local contribution or innovative, high-impact work in the community.

Cllr. Keith Butterick, Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council for the period 2025/26, said:
"Christine Bampton Smith has been a tremendous and loyal member of Hebden Royd Town Council. She represented the best in local politics - putting the community first above party politics and selflessly serving the community in several roles. For new councillors she was always ready with help and advice, ensuring that protocol was always followed at meetings. She had friends across the political divide and will be sorely missed."

Hebden Royd Town Council extends its deep gratitude to Christine Bampton Smith for everything she has done for the community throughout her impressive tenure and wishes her all the best for the future.

Thanks to everyone who made Hebden's Happy Hounds 2026 such a fantastic event! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿถ๐Ÿงก

Together, we raised ยฃ450 for our partners RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch via the fun dog show. The marketplace hosted fantastic local businesses and animal charities who also had an opportunity to raise funds for their vital work. Collectively, it made for a wonderful day and we're grateful to all who supported the event in any way. We hope you'll all join us again next year!

The photo album of the day is now up on the Hebden's Happy Hounds page. Have a look for your four-legged friends!
