Hello Everyone,

Another update from SEW.

Good morning,
We are writing to confirm the latest regarding water supply issues in the Ulcombe area of Kent.

The situation

This weekend saw the first heatwave of the year and the hottest May day on record. As expected, demand for water has surged, with demand reaching 670 million litres of water on bank holiday Monday (Monday, 25 May), which is almost 100 million litres more than the average for this time of the year.

Yesterday (Tuesday 26 May) was hotter than the bank holiday, however demand for water dropped to 660 million litres of water, this has allowed our drinking water storage tanks to recover slightly, putting us in a better position to start the day.

What have we been doing?

Our fleet of tankers has been working 24/7 putting additional water into the network in areas where demand has been extremely high and to support our stored water reservoirs.

However, due to the nature of water supply networks, some customers on higher ground or at the far end of the network may have had low pressure or supply interruptions, especially at peak use times.

In addition we have had some leaks and bursts, which while frustrating, is normal for a network of more than 9,000 miles in length and under high pressure at all times. We are deploying even more teams to be out and about looking for and fixing leaks.

We are preparing to deliver bottled water to the area for customers to collect. Our customer care team is preparing to deliver bottled water to customers on our priority services register who are unable to collect the water themselves.

Looking ahead

Forecasts show the hot spell is set to continue, so we are asking customers in other areas to be mindful of their water use, to help relieve pressure on the water system.

We will continue to do all we can to prevent and resolve the issues.
Regards,

Matthew Dean
Incident Manager
