This month's Bosence Three is our lovely nurse Clare! This is a great way to get to know a little bit about Clare as she is newly welcomed to the team! It is great to have you on board ๐
What drew you to a role in recovery?
My background in frontline emergency care has shown me how addiction affects people, physically, mentally, and emotionally. My current role at Bosence detox and rehabilitation unit has given me firsthand insight into how closely addiction, mental health, physical health, and emotional health are connected. Iโve seen the impact addiction can have not only on individuals, but also on families and communities, and Iโve also seen how powerful recovery can be when people are given the right support and compassion. While a student nurse, I had a nursing placement at Bosence and knew this was where I wanted to be.
My placement at Bosence as a student nurse had a particularly positive impact on me. I really valued the person-centred approach, the dedicated team there, and the supportive environment. It confirmed for me that recovery-focused work was an area I wanted to pursue further. I enjoy being able to build therapeutic relationships, support people through vulnerable stages of their recovery journey, and help them regain confidence and stability in their lives.
If you could share one piece of advice to someone entering recovery, what would it be?
I would say to be patient and kind to yourself. Recovery is rarely a straight line, and progress often comes through small, consistent steps rather than immediate changes. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness, and having the right support network around you can make a huge difference. Even on difficult days, every positive step forward counts. This is your journey and it may look different to others, don't worry, that's ok.
One piece of advice I always give is to talk to us, even when it's hard, please keep talking to us.
What activities help to keep you grounded and focused on your wellbeing?
Working in both frontline care and addiction services, I understand the importance of maintaining balance and looking after my own wellbeing. I stay grounded by making time for exercise and especially enjoy running with my family, spending time outdoors and travelling in our campervan to see as much of the world as possible! And spending time with my family because they are my support network. This helps me remain focused, resilient, and able to provide the best care and support to others.
