Last night our volunteer crew carried out a training exercise using our mobile vehicles, travelling down Layriggs Lonning, back through Millom and around to Millom Pier, before crossing the Mains and checking the sea wall on the return to the boathouse.

As part of the exercise, the team checked that access tracks and routes were clear for emergency call-outs, helping ensure our crew can reach the areas where they are needed safely and quickly.

We also checked that the buoys marking the correct route to get out of the moorings into the estuary remained in their correct positions.

Regular training and checks like these help us stay prepared, keep access routes clear and ensure we are ready to respond when called upon.

Have you seen the large yellow Florida buoy that’s now on display?

Alison smith originally came across the buoy between Silecroft and Haverigg in April 2023, and made contact with the National Marine Sanctuary Program in Florida Keys. They are part of the NOAA which is the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

Although they couldn’t tell Alison exactly when the buoy had been first put in the sea, they were thrilled that it had found its way 4,400 miles across the Atlantic to end up here! They wrote a press release for some of the local news outlets, including CBS News which can be found following this link:

Since then the buoy has had some incredible art work done by Millom mayor Simone Faulkner and is on display just down from the boathouse.
