1451 Haverhill Squadron ATC

1451 Haverhill Squadron ATC Welcome to the official 1451 (Haverhill) Squadron ATC page. Enterprise! Uniformed Youth Organisation

Intakes: March and September

Are you up for fun, adventure, incredible experiences and making new friends? Are you looking for something to give you the edge in life? Then welcome to the RAF Air Cadets. Better known as the 'Air Cadets', we’re a UK-wide cadet force with more than 40,000 members aged between 12 and 20 years. We're sponsored by the Royal Air Force and can give you hands-on experience of activities and courses th

at will challenge and develop your skills to help you succeed in whatever you want to do. HRH The Duchess of Cambridge is also our Honorary Air Commandant! The RAF Air Cadets is made up of two areas:
• Air Training Corps - The ATC is the RAF's cadet force, divided into six regions, 34 wings and more than 900 squadrons within communities around the UK
• Combined Cadet Force (RAF) - The CCF (RAF) is our section of the CCF which is made up of cadets from all three services, coming together in approximately 200 independent and state schools across the country

Our aims are to:
• Promote and encourage a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force among young people
• Provide training which will be useful in the Services and civilian life
• Encourage the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship
And there's one more important thing - it's a lot of fun! We are not a recruiting organisation for the RAF but if you're thinking about a Service career, cadet membership will put you ahead of the competition. Many cadets go on to great success in the RAF (and the other Services). Around 40% of officers and 50% of all aircrew (including pilots, navigators and engineers) in the RAF now are ex-cadets. Research shows that they do better in basic training and stay in the Service longer than their colleagues. Likewise, if you chose a civilian career our research proves you can go on the great things…employers just love the skills and experience that air cadets offer.

We are proud to officially unveil the new badge of 1451 (Haverhill) Squadron, recently approved by the Inspector of RAF Badges. ✈️

The badge was formally presented by Flt Lt Nathan Young RAFAC to Fg Off Caitlin Smith RAFAC during the transition of command from Flt Lt Young to Fg Off Smith as Officer in Charge — marking both a significant milestone in the Squadron’s history and the beginning of its next chapter.

The badge reflects both the heritage of Haverhill and the spirit of the Squadron:
🔹 The roundel barry wavy represents the Stour Brook and the chalk hills of the Newmarket Ridge surrounding Haverhill
🔹 The sun’s rays symbolise action, purpose, and the commitment of both cadets and staff
🔹 The Saxon Crown recognises Haverhill’s ancient foundation and historical links to Anne of Cleves

The Squadron motto, ENTERPRISE, reflects the ambition, initiative, and determination demonstrated across the unit every day.

Speaking after the presentation, Flt Lt Young said:
“This badge represents far more than a symbol — it reflects the history, identity, and values of 1451 Squadron. It is fitting that it is presented at a moment of transition, recognising both the achievements of the Squadron so far and the exciting future ahead under Fg Off Smith’s leadership.”

Fg Off Smith added:
“It is an honour to receive the Squadron’s newly approved badge as I take on the role of Officer in Charge. The badge and motto, ENTERPRISE, perfectly capture the attitude and dedication of our cadets and volunteers, and I look forward to continuing to build on the Squadron’s success.”

A huge thank you to everyone involved in supporting the development and approval of the badge - this marks an important moment in the continuing history of 1451 (Haverhill) Squadron.

After an extraordinary career spanning nearly five decades, we bid a proud and heartfelt farewell to Warrant Officer Wilsher, who retires from the Royal Air Force Air Cadets in February 2026.

Beginning his RAFAC journey as a cadet in June 1978, he rose to the prestigious rank of Cadet Warrant Officer before transitioning to adult staff. From that moment on, he dedicated his life to supporting generations of cadets, shaping futures, and upholding the highest standards of the organisation.

Flt Lt Young RAFAC, Officer Commanding 1451, reflects on WO Wilsher’s career:

“WO Wilsher’s service and commitment to the Corps is an example to us all.
During his time at 2523 (Linton) Sqn and 1451 (Haverhill) Sqn, the number of staff and cadets he has supported during his service is innumerable.
You will be missed, and we wish you all the best with your next endeavours.”

His leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment have left a lasting legacy across every unit and every young person he has inspired.

We wish him a long, happy, and well‑earned retirement. Thank you, Warrant Officer Wilsher — your impact will be felt for many years to come.
