🌟 Community Spotlight: Jimmy Macs

This week we’re pleased to shine a spotlight on Jimmy Macs, who have been an important part of our community centre for many years. Jimmy Macs offers a welcoming place for people aged 55+ to enjoy activities, meet new people, and spend time together in a supportive community environment. We’re delighted to have them based within our centre and to share more about the wonderful work they do. 😊
👇 Take a look below to read a little more from the team about the activity center and what visitors can expect.

Jimmy Mac's Charity is based at the Hive. They are an Activity Centre for the older people of Hatfield, Welwyn and the surrounding areas. They are open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Thursday and on Friday and Sunday 9am – 2pm. Every Sunday a delicious roast dinner freshly cooked in the Centre's kitchen is served.
Membership is £10 per year.

Jimmy Mac's offers various activities during the week including chair exercises, chair Yoga, line dancing, crafting and knitting, Bingo and quizzes. There is a film show on a big screen in the dining room every other Monday.

Freshly cooked hot food is served every day. Tea, coffee and toast are available in the morning, and tea and biscuits are served after lunch.
Transport to pick clients up and bring them to Jimmy Mac's is available from Communities 1st and costs £5 for a round trip.

There are dances every month with a live entertainer. The entrance is £5 and includes a soft drink and nibbles

There are lots of day trips planned for the summer months including days out to the seaside, city trips, boat trips, one with an afternoon tea and another one with entertainment on board. At Christmas there is Pearly Kings and Queens Show and a trip to the London Lights which includes a fish and chip supper. The trips and the holiday can be paid in instalments. Members of staff es**rt the trips and clients are picked up and brought back to the Hive Centre.

All furniture and soft furnishing have been bought using funds raised by Jimmy Macs clients.

Jimmy Mac's Charity has been in existence for over 35 years. Their Motto is You're Never Alone at Jimmy Mac's'. There's something for everyone and a warm welcome is guaranteed. For those who are lonely, at a loose end or looking to make friends and have lots of fun Jimmy Mac's is definitely the place to come.

🌟 Community Spotlight: Footsteps 123 nursery 🌟

This week we’re delighted to introduce Footsteps 123 nursery, a much-loved permanent part of our community center. Their dedicated team provides a warm, welcoming, and nurturing environment where children can learn, play, and grow every day. We’re proud to have them as part of our center community and we are excited to share a little more about the fantastic work they do and what life at the nursery looks like. ✨
Below is a message written by the nursery team about who they are and what a typical day at nursery looks like. ✨

Footsteps 123 nursery is a home from home nursery environment, we pride ourselves on creating a warm, nurturing, and welcoming environment where every child is valued as an individual. We believe children learn best when they feel safe, happy, and supported, and our dedicated staff work closely with families to ensure each child’s individual needs are met.
We provide care and education for children aged 3 months to 5 years, with spaces for up to 60 children per day. Our nursery is term-time only, with selected opening during half terms, Easter holidays, and summer holidays to support working families.
Our daily routine is carefully planned to provide children with a balance of structured learning, creativity, physical development, outdoor exploration, and free play opportunities.
A typical nursery day includes:
• 8:30am – Children arrive and settle into free play
• 9:00am – Circle time
• 9:15am – Adult-led learning activities
• 10:15am – Snack time
• 10:45am – Outdoor play and exploration
• 12:00pm – Lunch time
• 12:45pm – Afternoon adult-led activities
• 1:45pm – Garden play
• 2:30pm – End of nursery session

We also offer after-school and nursery clubs from 2:30pm–4:30pm Monday to Thursday, and until 4:00pm on Fridays.
Our nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to guide children’s learning and development. Staff carefully observe and support each child’s progress while planning engaging monthly topics that reflect children’s interests and developmental needs.

Children benefit from a wide range of exciting experiences, including:
• Cooking and baking activities
• Outdoor learning and garden play
• Physical activities in the sports hall
• Soft play sessions
• Creative and sensory experiences
• Opportunities to build confidence, independence, and social skills

Our team of 12 caring and experienced staff are passionate about helping children develop a love of learning through play-based experiences in a safe and stimulating environment.
At Footsteps 123 nursery we aim to provide children with the best possible start to their educational journey while building strong partnerships with parents and carers.
Our nursery places a strong focus on safeguarding and children’s wellbeing. All staff are fully trained in safeguarding procedures and work hard to ensure children feel safe, secure, and supported within our setting. We promote a caring and inclusive environment where every child is respected and encouraged to grow in confidence and independence.
We are committed to supporting all children’s individual needs, including children with additional needs and disabilities, and we work closely with parents, carers, and outside professionals to ensure every child can reach their full potential.
We also encourage healthy lifestyles through nutritious snacks, physical activities, outdoor play, and opportunities for children to develop good hygiene and self-care routines.
As children prepare for their transition to school, we help build confidence, independence, communication, and social skills to support school readiness and create a positive foundation for future learning.
Our recent Ofsted inspection highlighted the strong foundations of our nursery, recognizing that we meet the expected standards while continuing to strive for excellence in early years education and care.
The new Ofsted grading system graded us at Expected standard.
