What a difference 12 months can make 💙

Over the past year, First People Housing has doubled in size — an incredible milestone that reflects the organisation’s continued growth and the increasing number of people it can support.

In this update, CEO Wendy Nee looks back at the past 12 months, shares what that growth has meant and explains why, above everything else, she is most proud of the First People team.

Moving into supported housing is an important step—but it is only the beginning.

At First People Housing, support starts with understanding the individual: their circumstances, the challenges they face and what they want to achieve.

Together, we create a practical support plan that can include managing a tenancy, attending appointments, developing everyday skills, building healthier routines and preparing for greater independence.

Progress looks different for everyone. Our role is to provide a safe place to live, consistent support and the opportunity to move forward at a realistic pace.

No two people arrive at supported housing with exactly the same experiences, circumstances or goals.

That’s why effective support begins with listening.

At First People Housing, we work with each resident as an individual—understanding where they are now, what they want to achieve and what support may help them move forward.

That could mean help with maintaining a tenancy, attending appointments, building healthier routines, developing practical skills or preparing for greater independence.

Progress will look different for everyone. The important thing is that people are heard, treated with respect and supported to take their next steps.

A route off the streets by Christmas — but what happens after Christmas?

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has put rough sleeping firmly on the government’s agenda, pledging £442 million and calling for everyone sleeping rough to be offered a route into accommodation by Christmas.

It is an ambitious commitment, backed by action — including Burnham’s decision to donate 15% of his Prime Ministerial salary to homelessness charities and causes.

But getting somebody off the pavement is only the beginning.

With a record 135,580 households in temporary accommodation at the end of March, the wider housing crisis cannot be solved through emergency shelter alone.

Lasting change requires secure homes, proper support and joined-up action from government, councils, charities, businesses and communities.

We’re proud to work in partnership with The Hideout Collective, creating opportunities for the men we support to get involved in meaningful projects, develop practical skills and build confidence and purpose.

In this huge update, Mark looks back over the past 12 months, shares the latest on Bramble and Jonge Jan, introduces Project Lead Richard and explains the plans for Cludo — a 50-foot narrowboat currently in the process of being purchased.

Moving on from supported housing is a positive step—but being ready for greater independence doesn’t always mean someone is ready to manage everything alone.

Our dedicated Moving On House in Hatfield is designed for residents returning to full-time work who would still benefit from some support along the way.

Residents can stay for up to nine months, giving them the space and stability to:

• Adjust to a working routine
• Build confidence managing bills and money
• Take responsibility for everyday tasks
• Complete a probation period
• Establish a positive rental history
• Prepare to maintain a tenancy independently

It provides greater responsibility with a continued safety net, helping bridge the gap between supported housing and fully independent living.

Because supported housing isn’t the destination. Independence is.

First People Housing provides safe, structured supported accommodation for men across Hatfield and Stevenage.

Across our 34 homes, we support around 180 men as they work towards greater stability, recovery and independence. Our person-centred support can include help with maintaining a tenancy, attending appointments, building routines, developing practical life skills and planning for the future.

Our roots are firmly in Hertfordshire, but we also welcome referrals from beyond the county.
