💜✨ Welcome Back to the Crossley Heath Family! ✨💜

It was wonderful to open our doors again this week and welcome our students back to Crossley Heath for the start of a brand-new school year!

A particularly warm welcome goes to our new Year 7 students, beginning their Crossley Heath journey, and our Year 12 students, starting an exciting new chapter in Sixth Form. 📚

There were plenty of smiles, new faces and familiar ones as everyone settled in, and it was fantastic to see the school full of life once again.

We hope you all have a brilliant year ahead, filled with new opportunities, friendships and achievements.

Welcome back, Crossley Heath family – it's great to have you here! 💜👏

We’re looking for former students who might be interested in joining us for our annual Crossley Brothers Conference in London on Friday 6th November.

The conference brings together some of our most ambitious Sixth Form students, alongside our top-performing students who have recently completed their A Levels and headed off to pastures new. The aim of the event is to give these young people
the opportunity to hear directly from our alumni community about life beyond school, careers and the world of work.

Last year, we welcomed former students from a wonderful range of industries and career stages, speaking about everything from interview technique and LinkedIn networking, to making the most of your individual quirks in the workplace and AI and its implications for the future of work.

There’s no set format or topic - we’re very happy to discuss what might work best. We’d simply love you to share something you think would be useful, interesting or inspiring for students as they begin their journey beyond school.

If you’d be interested in supporting the event, we’d be incredibly grateful. Please do get in touch by emailing [email protected]. Thank you!

We’re delighted to share the experience of Ali, one of our Year 13 students and the first recipient of the 'Crossley Family Travel Scholarship'.

Ali travelled to Germany to explore Berlin before heading to Bremen to attend IJCAI-ECAI 2026, one of the world’s leading AI conferences. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear from experts, explore the latest developments in AI and gain a whole new perspective on a subject he hopes to pursue in the future.

The Crossley Family Travel Scholarship offers our Sixth Form students the opportunity to take an educational trip relating to their studies - either in the UK or abroad. There they get to learn beyond the classroom, broaden their horizons and explore their ambitions.

A huge well done to Ali for making the most of this fantastic opportunity, and a massive thank you for the descendants of the Crossley brothers for their amazing generosity and continued support of our school.

We’re incredibly proud that Nobel Prize-winning scientist Oliver Smithies was a former pupil of Heath Grammar School, and it’s a real privilege to now be helping with a special project to uncover more about his early years here in Halifax.

We are working with Dr John Krege, a professor in the US who was a close personal friend, long-time admirer and colleague of Oliver’s. John is currently writing a book about Oliver’s extraordinary life and scientific achievements and would love to build a clearer picture of his formative years at Heath.

Oliver went on to become one of the world’s most influential geneticists. He pioneered techniques that transformed the study of genetics, including gene targeting in mice, and in 2007 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries that enabled specific gene modifications in mice. He also co-authored more than 350 research papers and continued working in his laboratory well into his eighties.

But before all of that, he was a Halifax schoolboy with a fascination for science, radios and telescopes.

We’re currently searching our own archives for photographs, records and other material from Oliver’s time at Heath, but we’d love the help of our wider community too.

Did you know Oliver? Do you have any memories, stories, photographs, school reports or other material relating to his time here? Or perhaps you’re a member of Oliver’s family or knew him later in life and would be interested in speaking with John?

If you can help in any way, we would be incredibly grateful. Please email: [email protected]. Thank you!

What a weekend for Monty! 🏏

A huge congratulations to Monty, one of our inaugural Sporting Excellence Programme students, who helped Yorkshire U16s secure a thrilling 12-run victory over Staffordshire in the ECB U16 County Cup semi-final this weekend.

Monty has also been selected for the Yorkshire Academy U18s to face Ireland U19s in a three-day fixture this week.

The U16 County Cup Final awaits Sunday 13th September at Loughborough University, with the opposition still to be decided.

We’re incredibly proud to see one of our very first Sporting Excellence students already achieving at such a high level and we can't wait to see what the future holds. Well done Monty and best of luck for the week ahead.

Today we're sharing the story of former Head Girl Gabrielle, who has gone on to achieve some amazing things since leaving us in 2021.

Since graduating from Newcastle University with First-Class Honours in Politics and International Relations, Gabrielle has:

- Worked in Parliament as Communications Officer for Kate Dearden MP for Halifax
- Completed a placement at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, working in Public Diplomacy
- Now, she's secured a place to study an MSc in Global Governance and Diplomacy at the University of Oxford

Gabrielle is currently fundraising to help make her Oxford dream possible, having faced the significant financial barriers that can come with postgraduate study. Her campaign reflects her determination to ensure that financial circumstances don’t stand in the way of life-changing opportunities such as this.
