A special Freedom Parade took place in Halifax today to celebrate 20 years since the formation of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment. The parade started at the Town Hall, with the Yorkshire Regiment in full ceremonial dress, with military bands, cadets and veterans taking part. The Mayor, Councillor Andrew Tagg, addressed and inspected the troop beside the Duke’s Memorial at the Woolshops, before the parade continued and culminated with a special service in Halifax Minster.

A further family fun day event will take place at Bankfield Museum on Saturday 20 June 10am-3pm. The event will explore over 300 years of military history, with lots to see including historical re-enactments, live firing, talks and military displays covering 1702, the American Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars, Crimean War, Second World War and the British Army in the 1960s to 1980s.

We’re proud to welcome The Royal Yorkshire Regiment to Halifax today for their Freedom Parade.

Today’s event is especially significant, marking 20 years since the Regiment was formed from the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire, the Green Howards and the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment.

We’re just about to step off on our second Freedom Parade which is in Halifax today. It’s especially significant, as 20 years ago today, the Regiment was formed from its antecedents, the Prince of Wales Own, the Green Howards and the Duke of Wellington’s Regiments.

We carried forward the traditions of those great Regiments, and forge a new path as the Royal Yorkshire Regiment.

Today, Cllr Dan Sutherland, Calderdale Council’s Leader, has written to the Chair of the national Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs, urging that Calderdale be included in the scope of the inquiry.

This is essential in getting justice for the victims and learning the lessons to ensure these horrific crimes are prevented in future.
