Citizens Advice Calderdale

Citizens Advice Calderdale Citizens Advice Calderdale helps people to solve their problems by providing free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to all.

As an organisation we value the principles of diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination in whatever form it may take. Clients can access our service face-to-face, by phone or by email. They are also encouraged to use the web based Advice Guide programme that provides a huge amount of advice on a range of subjects. Clients are empowered to solve problems themselves whilst those who r

equire more detailed and individual support receive specialist casework advice as appropriate. By providing advice across key areas such as benefits, debt and employment we aim to bring about positive changes in people's lives. The positive effect of our advice can range from hard outcomes such as maximising household incomes and the associated improvement in health and wellbeing through to the softer benefits such as improved family relationships and increased individual confidence. We aim to achieve broader changes for the local community and we work positively with partners in local government and other agencies to improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives.

Pride in Place

Thanks to Kate Dearden, Calderdale Council and Ash Green School, and the residents of Mixenden and Illingworth for a fantastic event last Friday.

Great to hear the voice of local residents sharing their ambitions and aspirations for their community.

And obviously thanks for the cakes!

Making work pay?
In the autumn budget, the government announced an increase in the National Living Wage, boosting wages for millions of people.
This rise pushed some families over the eligibility threshold for Free School Meals. This can save parents £450-500 a year per child and losing this can often make them worse off.
Such a low threshold can often prohibit parents taking on extra hours or applying for a promotion.
This isn’t just about budgets, it’s about children’s health and attainment. Investing in children by providing quality free meals now, is investing in healthy workers for the future.

Ten top tips to save yourself from scams from Which?

Top tips to avoid being scammed
Scammers are becoming more skilled at devising schemes designed to con you. But there are things you can do to protect yourself:

1.Don’t pay any attention to investment opportunities or offers that sound too good to be true. Do your own research before you part with any cash.
2.Check the address of a website or read online reviews before entering any personal or financial details. Look up the website information on a domain checker such as who.is – if it’s a newly created site then it’s a red flag.
3. Ignore texts, emails and calls from unknown contacts and invitations to WhatsApp groups that you’ve never heard of.
4. Never click links in unsolicited messages.
5. Ignore adverts and posts on social media that aren’t from online accounts. You can verify company social media accounts by checking the links on a company’s official website.
6. Look out for spelling and grammar mistakes as well as missing About us, Contact us and Terms and conditions pages.
Stick to official ticket sellers and resale platforms for events or concerts.
7. Preview the website that a QR code leads to before actually visiting it.
8. Sign up for free Which? Scam Alert emails to get the latest scams news and advice.
If you’ve lost money to a scammer, call your bank immediately using the number on the back of your card and report the scam to Action Fraud.

Stay safe.

Please share with others.

SCAM WARNING

Virgin Media O2 is today warning customers to watch out for fake ‘ECO4’ energy efficiency scheme texts after detecting a significant increase in the number of these messages targeting its customers.

The text messages sent by scammers are fraudulently using the government energy efficiency scheme and other energy bill support programmes as a ploy to trick customers into handing over personal data or payment details. They are now the fourth most common texts reported and blocked on Virgin Media O2’s mobile network.

Following the warning, National Energy Action (NEA), the national charity working to end fuel poverty, has advised anyone who may be facing financial hardship and struggling with energy bills to firstly contact their energy supplier, or local authority as they’ll have a range of support measures available.

People can also check whether a company is verified to work on government schemes by searching for the business on TrustMark’s website, the government endorsed quality scheme.

More advice is also on NEA’s website, which is one of more than 60 websites that offer financial, health, education and wellbeing guidance that have been zero-rated on O2’s network. This means any O2 customer can visit the site without using any of their data allowance.

If you are struggling financially you can also contact your local citizens advice.
