Do you remember Calderdale's Million Trees Initiative?

Did you plant trees through your school, community group or local organisation in Calderdale during the 1990s?

Researchers from the University of Leeds are working with Calderdale Council to evaluate the legacy of the Million Trees Initiative, a major tree-planting programme that took place during the 1990s.

We would love to hear from people who were involved in the project, whether you helped plant trees, attended a school planting event, volunteered, owned land where trees were planted, or simply remember the initiative.

We are conducting short interviews to understand people's experiences and memories of the project and its impact on Calderdale's landscapes and communities. If you would be willing to share your memories, please get in touch with the research leader Katy Wright [email protected]

Please note that interviews are being conducted by the University of Leeds research team, not Calderdale Council. If you get in touch with us, we will give you more information on how your interview will be used and answer any questions you might have about the project.

A 'Big Up' for two of our volunteers Toby and Christina, who spent a whole, very wet day on the moors today at Ogden Water Nature Reserve. They were conducting repeat vegetation surveys of those undertaken 3 years ago, and will evidence how the re-wetting work which was funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority is affecting the habitat 👏. We were rewarded by several fly-pasts of raven and a distant call of curlew. 💧 🌿 wetter moors help to protect communities from flooding and wildfire.

During the warm weather last weekend there was a very large amount of visitors to Gaddings Dam, Todmorden. This resulted in an enormous amount of rubbish being left on site, including barbecues.

Please can we kindly request that anyone who visits takes all their rubbish home. Barbecues are not allowed on this land because its covered by Public Service Protection Order which helps to protect the moorland from wildfire. Anyone caught with a barbecue or source of ignition in this area is liable to a £2500 fine.

Please help us protect this Site of Special Scientific Interest from the risks that wildfire poses by visiting in a sensible and safe manner.

With temperatures set to rise again today, we would like to remind the public that using disposable BBQ’s and lighting fires on our moorlands, and within areas covered by Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO's) is illegal.

These actions massively increase the risk of wildfires, especially on warmer days. Wildfires can spread rapidly, causing serious and long lasting damage to wildlife, the environment and local communities.

Thank you to those who continue to report these illegal activities; supporting the efforts to prevent wildfires across our moorlands.

🔥 📲 Report the use of BBQ and fires on moorland by calling 999 - Ask for Fire and Rescue.
