🏳️‍🌈 We are deeply disappointed that the new administration has refused calls to fly the Pride flag during Pride Month, including at Shibden Hall.

The administration has argued that only the Union Flag can represent everyone in Calderdale and that other flags and symbols are divisive. We respectfully disagree.

Shibden Hall is not just another council-owned building. It was the home of Anne Lister, whose life and diaries have given Halifax and Calderdale an international place in LGBTQ+ history. Visitors travel from across the UK and around the world to learn about her life and legacy. For many le***an women and LGBTQ+ people, Shibden Hall is a place of profound significance.

That is why we have asked for the Pride flag to be flown at Shibden Hall during Pride Month.

There is clear and recurrent evidence from population based surveys in England, and a growing body of research and peer-review published evidence in a UK context that LGBT+ people experience worse health inequalities. Measures to promote inclusion can help toward improving the health and wellbeing of people who face discrimination. When local councils fly a Pride flag it demonstrates that inclusion is a shared community responsibility. It can reduce stress and increase trust and help build cohesion within communities.

The Pride flag does not diminish anyone else’s identity, nor does it exclude anyone. It is a symbol of visibility, dignity and belonging for a community that has had to fight for recognition, equality and acceptance. Flying it at Shibden Hall during Pride Month would have been a simple but meaningful recognition of Anne Lister’s legacy and of the LGBTQ+ residents who are part of our Calderdale community today.

To our LGBTQ+ residents, their families, friends and allies: please know that we stand with you. We will continue to champion an inclusive Calderdale that celebrates all its communities and honours the history that makes our borough unique.

Love, dignity and respect are not divisive values.

Happy Pride Month to everyone celebrating across Calderdale. 🏳️‍🌈

🚗 Good news for Albert Promenade residents 🚗

We’re delighted that council officers have agreed to reinstate the safety camera on Albert Promenade following concerns about speeding and road safety, particularly after the recent serious collision in which a vehicle overturned.

Following concerns raised by residents, Councillor Ann Kingstone contacted officers requesting action and the reinstatement of the camera. The issue was then discussed at a meeting this morning attended by Councillor Dave Mendes Da Costa, who pushed for the camera to be restored with support from Councillor Cathy Featherstone.

We’re pleased that officers have listened and agreed to reinstate this important road safety measure.

The camera was originally installed following campaigning by Labour councillors in the ward, including former Councillor Mike Barnes and Councillor Colin Hutchinson, who worked with residents to secure measures to improve safety on this stretch of road.

Road safety remains a priority for us, and we’ll continue working with residents and council officers to address concerns about speeding and dangerous driving in our area.

Thank you to everyone who has contacted us about Albert Promenade and helped make the case for action.

The government recently announced that it is creating a Mental Health Strategy for the country and, alongside this, that an extra £470m will be made available over the next 4 years to help deliver mental health services.

In Wainhouse we're lucky to have The Arch-Way Project which delivers vital help for people with mental health problems to remain independent in the community. The charity is at risk of needing to close its doors this summer so we have written to Kate Dearden MP for Halifax to ask her to look into whether this funding could be used to help.

We don't want to leave any stone unturned to help keep Arch-Way Project delivering for our community.

Happy Eid to all celebrating on this beautiful day!

'No thanks or explanation' for Halifax's vicar as Reform sacks him from council standards committee

21/05/2026

Yesterday, Dave gave his maiden speech in Annual Council, seconding the proposal for Cllr Sarah Courtney to be our Mayor.

While the proposal was defeated, the words about our ward, our borough and the importance of the inclusion of everyone in Calderdale are worth sharing.

20/05/2026

This afternoon in the Council Chamber, Ann spoke in support of Sarah Courtney becoming Mayor of Calderdale.

She also spoke against the decision by the new Reform administration to tear up more than 50 years of established civic tradition.

The Calderdale mayoralty has always been allocated according to a cross-party formula intended to keep the office politically neutral and above party point-scoring. This year it should, by long-standing convention, have been Labour’s turn to hold the mayoralty.

Instead, Reform used their majority to impose a Reform Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

We believe that is deeply damaging to the civic traditions of Calderdale and to the principle that the Mayor represents everyone, regardless of politics.

We’re sharing Ann’s speech here so that residents can hear directly why it was important to speak out, and learn what a historic Mayor Reform has deprived them of.

As many people will have noticed, there has recently been a significant increase in trolling, abuse and political spamming on this page.

Wainhouse Labour welcomes respectful discussion, meaningful debate and genuine questions from residents. We are always happy to engage constructively and to answer respectful comments wherever we can.

However, we will not allow this page to become a platform for:
• trolling or abusive behaviour
• harassment of councillors, members or residents
• promotion or campaigning for other political parties

Comments of that nature will be deleted and the individuals responsible will be blocked from the page.

A common form of trolling is to place laughter emojis on posts that are not intended to be humorous.

Because moderating large volumes of troll activity takes significant time and resources, we will also increasingly be limiting commenting to established followers of the page. Facebook defines this as people who have been following for more than 24 hours.

So, if you would like to take part in discussions or engage with us on Facebook, we strongly recommend following the page.

We want this page to remain a useful, informative and welcoming space for residents of Wainhouse Ward, and we thank the many people who already contribute positively and respectfully.
