South East Coast Immediate Medical Care Scheme

South East Coast Immediate Medical Care Scheme Simcas provides prehospital emergency medical care in the counties of Kent, Sussex & Surrey.

We have 15 members who respond for South East Coast Ambulance Service as part of their 999 response to emergencies. SIMCAS (South East Coast Immediate Care Scheme) is a charity affiliated to the British Association for Immediate care (BASICS). We have 15 members across Sussex Kent and Surrey who respond for South East Coast Ambulance Service in response to a 999 call. Our members are predominantly

doctors and include GPs, anaesthetists, two emergency medicine consultants, as well as a nurse and a dual registered nurse/paramedic. Our members have undertaken a range of specialist training and are all experienced clinicians used to working in the prehospital environment. A number of our members teach prehospital care for BASICS and one is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for the Diploma in Immediate Care. Our services are provided on a voluntary basis and SIMCAS relies on the generosity of the public (including a number of grateful ex-patients and their families). To train and equip a member costs an average of £10,000 and each member undertakes refresher training on a regular basis. Additionally used equipment and drugs requires replacing all of which provide a constant drain on our finances.

A New Years Message from our Chairman:

"I’d like to reflect on this year by thanking the amazing team that SIMCAS has become. From a tiny dormant group at the beginning of 2021, SIMCAS received a terrific boost with kick-starter support from Platinum Ambulance Service, so recruitment and training could begin in earnest.
We now have a proper corporate structure and members working hard on all aspects required for a modern, properly governed service. We are now a team of 11 doctors, 5 nurses, an ODP and 14 paramedics. We cover the entire gamut of prehospital care, from people bringing years of front line experience and expertise to enthusiastic clinicians keen to add prehospital care to their portfolio.
It feels an impossible task to pick out particular supporters as everyone has done so much, but particular thanks must go to Tim Mordaunt for providing our superb fully equipped response car and hosting training days, Kevin Fuller for organising training and PPE options so well, Adam Waller, Dom Ward, Patrick Hayes, Chris Martin and Jamie Monks for their work on our Clinical Standard Operating Procedures – Jamie also for our superb website. Abi Monck is really leading from the front on fundraising so please consider helping her raise money for the charity through her JustGiving page (https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/abigail-monck-elements) (https://justgiving.com/campaign/simcas). Jed Herman has organised clothing and kept our operations map up to date and everyone has got involved in teaching and contributed to our internal discussion groups. Thank you all for your input – you are making SIMCAS what it is and will be. I am looking forward to 2022 as the year we will really get going, and we are building on the solid support the entire team has given. We are all glad to see the back of 2021 for so many reasons and I am sure you will join me in wishing our wonderful team a very happy New Year and a 2022 that will be so much better."

I hope you all stay safe and well and a very Happy New Year!

Another huge milestone for South East Coast Immediate Medical Care Scheme!

Almost half of our entire responding membership came together on Saturday 2nd October at Platinum Ambulance Service's base for our first training day of the new era. We had updates on equipment from Kevin and Tim, stepwise airway management with Adam, modern management of traumatic cardiac arrest using the HOTT trauma algorithm from Gerry, and a brilliant sociable lunch provided by Tim. We also reviewed the options for uniform and Personal Protective Equipment with some excellent samples.

Outdoor training had to be held as the weather was beyond atrocious but it will feature shortly so we can drill Road Traffic Collisions, Major Trauma and other incidents in austere, pre-hospital environments.

A big thank you to Adam, Gerry, and Kevin for such a great start and a special thank you to Tim and Platinum Ambulance Service for hosting us. We'll be doing it again very soon. The future is looking very bright for SIMCAS and its members!
